Howdy folks,

In a "box o' parts", I got the handguard below. Based on other parts in the bundle, I assumed Mauser and queried over on a Mauser forum. The response I got suggested Krag (which I had not considered, mea culpa). What say ye?

If you look at the "photos" section of this forum, link on the bottom of the home page, there is a picture comparing the different Krag hand guards. (copied below)

Yours looks to be similar to the middle one in the picture which is an 1898 or 1902 hand guard for either the rifle or carbine sights.

You hand guard is something people need and it looks to be without any cracks, too, which makes it more valuable.

Those barrel clips are often so strong that they crack the old wood when the hand guard is taken off the firearm barrel.

I've glued and repaired and refinished many of these for my Krags when they were cracked. It's not always that easy.

You can sell your hand guard on ebay or gun broker or send it to one of us free post paid!

Thank you Sir. I did look at the picture you shared but, having no scale, I could not be definite. This one will probably go on the block in the next few days---cleaning up The Dungeon, don't-ch-know. What is a fair price?

I immediately thought "1902 handguard" the second I saw the photo!

It definitely is a U.S. Krag 1898/1902 hand-guard. It appears to be an original and not a reproduction. It looks slightly rough with bumps and dings.

A reasonable price would be $75 to $90, if there are no cracks.

It is good to store with a Quarter twisted into the back spring and a Nickel in the front one, to counteract the spring tension.

It would be nice if you sold it to a member of the KCA Forum, who needs one.
