Title: Krag 22 Caliber Gallery Gun
Post by Mark21 on Aug 17th, 2019 at 1:29am
I have come into what I think is a Krag gallery gun.  It is the same size as a standard 30-40 Krag.  The barrel is for the 22 caliber.  The receiver is not marked Cal 22.  The front sight has been replaced with an aftermarket sight that is dove tailed into the barrel.

Reading through Brophy, the receiver has not been modified above the chamber.

Any guidance is appreciated

Pictures!?! What kind of guidance are you looking for?

Apparently is is some kind of Stevens-Pope conversion, as opposed to the extractor-plate design from SA, which ARE marked .22 cal. Serials on those run a little higher, too. Photos really are required for a proper ID.

Which areas do you need pictures of?  From the right and left sides it looks just like a Krag 30-40 rifle.

Actually, with 120 years of handling, use, rebuilding (arsenal and non-arsenal), abuse, Bubba and neglect, very few Krags look the same. I'm sure we would find many fine details on yours to comment on and learn from. Post as many close up pictures of every feature of your Krag.

Many thanks!

Looking further on the internet, it is a Steven Pope conversion as Dick said.  I found a thread from here (KCA) in 2014.  The barrel is not marked Steven Pope, but it has a serial number on the bottom of the barrel.
The post from 2014 talks about a wide dove tailed front sigh as mine has.  Though my receiver s/n is higher than the OP posts.

Still working on it and will get pictures later.

The stock has a cartouche dated 1901, P proof, 1901 rear sight and hand guard.

If you removed the 22 barrel and installed a 3040 barrel you could not tell.

Take another look at the barrel. The Stevens marked barrels are stamped in small and sometimes faint letters on the top of the barrel far forward of the front sling swivel band. It is easy to miss without good light and looking in that location. It should look like this.

Opp's missed the barrel marking photo. The Barrel should be marked like this.
