Title: Krag Carbines in Neat Rack - Spanish American War
Post by Rcat7147 on Sep 11th, 2019 at 6:30pm
This is currently up for auction.  Unfortunately, already a bit out of my price range.  Still, the picture is great and I thought I'd share.

If anyone is interested in bidding, I'd be happy to be your proxy...but I don't want to give up my source  ;).  I bid it up to $50.

Any idea where the picture was taken or who the people are?

One fellow in the picture (I don’t know which) is Private Charles Burch from Akron, Ohio.  He was with the 3rd Cavalry, Troop B.
He enlisted in March of 1899 and served in the Philippines.
He was honorably discharged in April of 1902.

I just found it interesting that the uniforms in the photo aren't uniform. Some with brass buttons, some without. Some with belts, some without. Different types of belt buckles. Different pants. Some with leggings. At first I thought it was a school, but not with carbines. So were they from the same unit, or representatives from different units?

IMHO - This photograph shows different aspects of the U. S. Third Cavalry uniform. It has captured men of "Troop B", that are off-duty, getting ready for duty, or just coming off of duty.

The men 'with brass buttons' are wearing their 'Five-Button' uniform jacket, some with a white Dress-Shirt. The blue wool shirt, being worn by the other men, is the Fatigue shirt.

All the men have trouser stripes. We just can't see some of them.

Some of the men are wearing the model 1895 Kepi. One man is wearing a campaign hat. Other men are without head-gear.

To the left, in the picture, are 'lockers'. On top of the lockers are what appear to be 'covered' Spiked Dress-Helmets, as well as campaign hats. The Kepi is likely kept in the locker.

The leggings were not worn at all times. Given the construction of the room interior, the photo was most likely taken in a barracks in the U.S.A.

Some sources place Troop "B", 3rd U. S. Cavalry at Ft. Myer (Arlington, Va.), during part of 1899-1900, and in Wyoming, in 1902, upon returning from Luzon, P.I.

Neat photograph of racked model 1896 or 1898 carbines showing lots of barracks details! (The Magazine-Gates appear square-cornered and Boxy, which suggests model 1898 carbines. I like the padlocks on the rack and the cloth case on at least one carbine).

Glad you guys have enjoyed it.
I put another bid in but it ended up going for $75.  Just a bit kore than I wanted to spend on something I could look at for free haha.

For those interested, though, I did win an extremely rare Chafee Reese trials rifle in 45-70 from the auction.  It was incredibly poorly listed.  I was lucky to be there!

Which auction was it? That seems like a great price but I'd need to see it.

Thanks. Nice pictures.

It would be nice to see pictures of your newly acquired Chafee Reese rifle (perhaps in the "Other Firearms" section) as time allows.

I saw that and was going to bid on it but thought that one of you guys might want it more. If no one is going to bid, I'll try to get it and send a copy to others if wanted.

Great!  I'm really going to hate myself if that goes for some crazy price, haha.

Thanks 'Local Boy', that's 'more better'.

It is a better focused photo than the one in 'Rcat's original post.

I was wrong about the carbines. The 'boxy looking' magazine-gates were my delusion.
The stock bolt-handle 'cut-out' shows them to be model 1896 carbines.

I didn't notice the double-action revolvers in the top of the gun racks, before.

At the left edge of the photo, a Cook (possibly 'Black'), is partially shown wearing an apron and holding a 'Dinner Tri-Angle'. He was apparently cropped out of the original posted picture.

Attached, is likely face of Charles H. Burch. In the barracks photograph, he is in the rear row by the lockers. (The 'elevated' guys are apparently standing on boxes or crates. Charles was 5'7" tall).

Also attached is an identified picture of Charles.

These came from a good friends estate, figured I would say hello and share the pictures, I also picked up a beautiful condition 1900 marked Krag stock and a couple of 03 stocks as well.

'Pappy1600' - Welcome to the KCA Forum. I'm sorry for your loss of a good friend and fellow 'gun guy'. He obviously collected some neat stuff!

His 'Barracks Gun Racks' are similar to ones recently shown in an old photograph posted by 'Rcat7147'.

Your 'wood column' one looks like it held carbines and revolvers. The 'metal pipe' one was possibly for full length rifles.

Great detail! Thank you for sharing this information. Now, we can all build one or two and fill them!

I have taken the liberty of cropping your 'rack' photos, Rcat's, and another old barracks photo:

I've wanted to build one or more of these racks for a long time. Thanks for all the pictures to give me some design ideas.

I have enough garands, 03's ,Krags, to probably be close to filling at least one rack, I guess I have some more buying to do. The one rack is missing one of the rings, went back and checked today, no luck, it will be used as just a rifle rack for now, I doubt I will ever find another one.

They sure look neat when they are filled as we see in these pictures posted. I prefer the wooden ones over the metal racks. I also like to see the rifles stacked with the bolts on the outside. Looks much prouder than when they are backwards hiding the bolt and action.

I don't think I should restore them, I will repair the one that's apart for now.

Those racks are beautiful! I love the patina. If you have all the parts, that's great.

I would just reassemble and 'dust it off'. Add some Krag carbines and revolvers ... and a couple of old "Railway Locks" for security.

FWIW - Here is a simplified reproduction Barrack Rack at the Ft. Davis (Texas) National Historic Park.

It looks fairly do-able for the home craftsman and could be dimensioned for other arms.

Just the thing for 'The Man Cave"; envision it full of carbine length Krags!

Nice but too new looking.

I would leave them outside for a couple of years to get all weathered, rusty and develop a patina...just how I like my Krags. :D

Looks like the room my 4 brothers and I slept in growing up...minus the rifles/stands and barrel of grog. :-[

More barracks racks were identified by Mallory and Brophy:

A San Antonio Arsenal 'rotary' design, from 1895, holds 'trapdoor' carbines. (This design was apparently produced in some numbers at RIA).

1903 Springfield rifles are shown in rack designs labeled '1903' and '1908'.

The U.S. Navy ended up with lots of Krag rifles ..... this would be a nice "man cave" motif.

It would make a lovely pattern for some custom wallpaper!

Well, blew the dust off the one rack and wiped it down a little and set it up in my gun room, what I found out, it will hold every 03 variant, as well as M1 Garands, BM-59, it will not hold 30-40 Krag's, or M1A, not sure about the other one, need to put it back together and see, I ordered 2 Ordnance department marked locks for the bands to finish it off.  I was able to free up a bunch of rack space and I have a smile on my face from the nostalgia, I am sure my buddy is looking down on me with a big smile as well.
Here's to you Cordy! rest in peace my friend.

The scary part is I have one more rack that fits 20 guns that needs to be filled! :o

This must be the rack with the steel pipes supporting the center?

You have an amazing collection "Pappy". Hopefully, the other rack will hold Krags!

Guess I'll just go to my basement .... and play with some gun sights ...
