Title: Original 1898 carbine upgraded to 1899
Post by Val99 on Sep 30th, 2019 at 7:10pm
Found this original within serial numbers 1898 carbine upgraded to 1901 carbine rear sight and 1899 stock and handguard. Front sight has the small "c" also...was dirty and had white speckled mold throughout the wood and was taken apart and cleaned.

Val99 - Welcome to the KCA Forum.

You have a nice legitimate 'updated carbine', that's a veteran that could tell some stories!

Is there any 'Cartouche' or "Circled P" on the stock?

Welcome. You appear to have joined the ranks of having a nice 1898 Krag carbine. Lots of carbine parts that may or may not have been together for a while but they are now.

How's the bore? I'm always looking up other people's bores. Old habit of mine. Good bores often make good shooters but are not always necessary.

Looks like you cleaned her up well. Many authentic M1898 carbines are in the 120K range. There are rifles mixed into these ranges a lot but yours appears correct. Nice to have your butt storage compartment full also.

Enjoy and see what you can find next to build on your addicting Krag habit!

Thank you for the kind words on my one of 5001 carbines! The bore is quite good and will try to get a picture of it for you. Price of my carbine was cheaper than a sporterized rifle at the Chantilly gun show this past weekend. Dealer is known for buying out estates and not cleaning items up before selling them.

Clean stock with no markings at all probably a field replacement.

I found some pictures of one of my two M1898 Krag carbines to share. This one is SN: 120864. The other one is SN: 120021. So, out of 5002 manufactured, I have two, Val99 has one. I would like to have posts by any members (and guests) who have M1898 carbines so we can get an informal count of how many of the original 5002 we represent at KCA. I would like to know how many original ones remain as well as refitted ones.

This carbine below has been refitted with the M1899 32 inch style stock without the swivel ring, no cartouche and an M1901c rear sight. My other M1898 is an original 30" stock with faint cartouche visible, M1896c rear sight and swivel ring. I'll get pictures of that one soon.

This is very similar to Val99s.

Welcome to the forum Val99!

Pretty dandy carbine there!  Have you fired it yet?  How about a range report...

Put a few cleaning patches in that trap with the cleaning rods and oiler to keep that stuff from rattling around.

Is this with an M1896c rear sight and swivel ring also Dick?

I don't imagine there are many of these around. Would be nice to have some idea how many M1898 carbines are still in the original short stocks.

Nice part of your collection.

Yes, and yes. Had it a long time. Not the "hottest" of s/n ranges, but there is a significant little cluster in the high 130K-low 131K area. I think it's been in that short stock for quite awhile, from the blue/wear pattern on the barrel. I'm lucky to have it.

Yes, it would be quite informative to find out how many exist today along with serial number ranges.
