Title: A couple of NYC landmarks are being restored.
Post by butlersrangers on Oct 20th, 2019 at 5:43pm
In my search for details on the U.S. model 1875 1.65 inch Hotchkiss Mountain Gun, I learned of "Kaufmann's Army - Navy Store" in New York City.

This family business has long had a pair of Mountain Guns on the sidewalk in front of the store. The current owner has removed them for restoration. His father or grandfather is believed to have purchased them from Bannerman's.

When restored, one will likely grace the store window, from inside.

I was trying to figure out what the rifles in the window were. The top looks like it was going for $3.xx

I can only guess. The bottom 'rifle' looks like a 1903 Springfield or a "Parris-Dunn Springfield Trainer".

"Time to warm up the Way Back Machine" ..... "set dials to 1950 ... 319 West 42nd Street".

Butlersrangers,
Got a couple questions, did Bannermans sell the 1.65 guns to the public or just foreign war ministers? Did the $30.00 pack outfit include the gun or was it just the pack hardware?
Are these the same guns used for avalanche control by ski resorts?
Any photos of the cartridge?

I'll try one of my old songs here:

I'd rather be a sojer
With a mule and a mountain gun
Than a knight of old with spurs of gold
Or a Roman, Greek, or Hun

For when we are commanded
To open up the ball
We slap our guns together
And beside them stand or fall

Can't remember the rest of it.  Learned that 72 years ago.

'FredC' - The $30.00 price was just for sets of 'Pack Equipment'.

They listed one one cannon on carriage for 'Lawn Decoration', (no cartridges), for $250.

It appears Bannerman was hoping to sell the whole "Lot", in bulk, to some government. But, I am sure any interested party could have negotiated a smaller purchase.

Up until the 1960's, when U.S. laws addressed 'Destructive Devices', it was possible for the Public to buy functioning breech-loading cannon.

I knew a guy, back in 1964, that had a Finnish 20mm Lahti anti-tank rifle on a sledge. He fired it at a nearby State rifle range on a regular basis!

(I don't know what is used for Avalanche control. That would be Fun)!

I shot my mouth of with out understanding the details of that Bannerman advertisement. I thought back then you could buy the cannon for few dollars more than a Krag. So the cannon was $250.00 and no ammo available. It was in a thread that has been closed so I can not fix it anyway. Oh well, it was fun to think about anyway.
I do know a fellow that has his own Sherman tank. It has rubber treads and he does occasionally drive it on the highways. He did alter the main gun for simulated shooting (propane blasts). A few years I asked him if people gave him respect when he drove it, his reply is every one pulls off the road to take pictures.
