Title: The Official Roster of Ohio Soldiers in the War
Post by Culpeper on Dec 24th, 2019 at 12:18pm
The Official Roster of Ohio Soldiers in the War with Spain 1898-1899.

I reached a milestone with my book to spreadsheet project.  The names, ranks, residences are complete.  Here is the run down on the number of men per regiment.

First      1381
Second      1380
Third      1378
Fourth      1387
Fifth      1392
Sixth      1400
Seventh      1385
Eighth      1365
Ninth      459  (Battalion)
Tenth      1356
     12883

Actually I should say it is the number of entries of names in the rosters per unit.  There were multiple entries like when a soldier was discharged from 1st Sergt. to take a commission to 2nd Lieut. as one example.

Next is to finish adding 3000+ ages and then 4000+ remarks.  The remarks can be as simple a "Mustered out with Company" or read like a short novel.    :P

And then there is the artiliary and Cav units.  Eeek!   :o

Where did you get the information from on individual names?

There are a couple of scans of the book on-line.  I downloaded one about ten years ago.  Found another just recently.

I figured out how to make a chart in a spreadsheet.   ::)

Okay.  I was bored to death.

Good guesses but all wrong.  It was the Old Man himself.

1st OVI      Staff/Band      Hunt, Charles B.      Colonel      Cincinnati      64            Mustered in as Colonel.  Assigned to command 3rd Brig. 1st Div. 7th A. C. Sept. 1.  Relieved Sept. 13, 1898.  Returned to Regt. same date.

Maybe so but what am I going to do with that kodak of him in a dress holding a 5 iron?  And the back of the card reads "My very best girl.  Smooches  Charles Dana Gibson"

I'm not too certain the historians are ready for early photoshoped pictures.

Nope didn't have it.  Thanks for the info.  I suspect some of this information was used as source matierial for the later official roster.

An interesting soldier from the 9th OVI. Looks like he was a victim in WWI due to President Wilson's policies dealing with African-American soldiers. Just for the record, Wilson was a Democrat.

Barack's Kenyan grandfather.

There is some resemblance in physical appearance to Barack. But I doubt that there were but few other similarities. Fighting for our country instead of against it would be one difference. But this noble and capable Major (Colonel) Young was not dealt with fairly. Yet he likely helped the advance of racial equality, at least in the military, which was unfortunately negated to some extent during WWI.
