Age 42. Mustered in as Major. On detached service on staff of Maj. Gcn. W. R. Shafter, from
May 12 to June 6, 1898, per order Sec. of War. Attached to staff of Brig. Gen. S. B. M.
Young June 7 to July 14, 1898. Acting Assistallt Adj. Gen., Acting Brig. Q. M., and Acting
Brig. Com. 2nd Brig. Cav. Div., 5th A. C., July 1 to 7, 1898. Wounded in action at San Juan
River, Cuba, July 1, 1898; July 14 to 24, en route to rejoin Regt. under orders for P. R.
Landed at Guanica, P. R., July 25, 1898, with Engineer Batt.  In action at Marianna Sugar
Mills, P R., July 26, 1898. In command of expedition to Tallaboa, P. R., capturing town of
Yaueo, P. R, July 28, 1898. Assigned to Staff of Maj. Gen. John R. Brooks Aug. 9, 1898.
Aug. 16 to 25, 1898, en route to rejoin Regt.   Aug. 26, 1898, on Detached service to accompany
the President to Camp Meade, Pa., and Camp Wikoff and Cleveland, O. Relieved and returned
to duty Sept. 8, 1898. Absent at muster out of Regt. by authority of the Adj. Gen. of the
Army.  Mustered out Nov. 21, 1898. Nominated by the President to be Brevet Lieut. Col.
for gallantry in action at Santiago, Cuba. And to be Brevet Colonel for efficient services in
the campaign in Porto Rico PHILIPPINE SERVICE. Appointed Lt. Col. 31st Inf., U. S. V.,
July 5, 1899.  Reported to Brig. Gen. S. B. M. Young. Commanding Cav. Brig. of Lawton's
Div. 8th A. C.. Nov. 29, 1899. Took part in the defense of Vigan, Northern Luzon, Dec 4
1899.  Attached to Gen. Young's Staff Dec. 5, 1899. Rejoined Regiment at Zamboanga, Island
of Mindanao, Dec. 31, 1899. Tendered resignation and honorably discharged May 31, 1900.
SERVICE IN CHINA. Ordered to China for duty as a Volunteer Staff Officer July 25, 1900.
Reported to Maj Gen. A. R. Chaffee as Aide de Camp with 3rd Squad., 6th U. S. C., Capt. W.
W. Forsythe, commanding on Cav. raid.  Sent out from Peking.  Returned to U. S., arriving
at San Francisco, Dec, 1

Well that explains much.  I didn't make the connection to President Hayes.  So being the son of a Brig. General and President has its benefits though I am certain he was one tough Ohioan in his own right.

I see he was in the Boxer Rebellion with the 6th Cavalry as an Aide de Camp for Major General Chaffee.
