I bumped this thread because of questions regarding "stepping" a barrel to fit a 1903 Springfield banded front-sight.

The current version of my 1903 "Khyber Carbine" has 'finger grooves' added to the stock. (Since this photo, a 1903 'milled' barrel-band has replaced the 'stamped' 03-A3 band).

The rig can be fired with iron sights or a scope can be quickly added with Weaver-rings.
