Title: The Krag and the farmer's daughter
Post by Culpeper on Feb 18th, 2020 at 6:20pm
HA!  I'm learning how to make click bait.

Just kiddin'.  Have any of you guys loaded 175 SMKs in .30-40?  I have a pic of a letter (chances are I downloaded it from here in the past) from possibly 1926 that states 220 grain ammo was no longer produced and that the new 172 grain boattail bullets of the new 30-06 ammo could be used to have accurate krag ammo.  Yeah I know.  Culpeper, why don't you jest shoot 180s?  The answer is simple.  I'm teeched in the hed.

Oh and the farmer's daughter shot her Krag at Camp Perry and skunked all of those slacker m1903s in the Roosevelt (spit) and Vintage matchs.

The end.

I've used Sierra 168 grain Match King projectiles in most of my Krag rifles and carbines, because, I bought a stockpile of these bullets, years ago.

They have performed well for me at 50 and 100 yards. The reloads have fed well in most of my Krags.

This is likely not the optimum projectile for the Krag barrel's long 'lead'.
I believe a lot of KCA members, who have put more time into load development, prefer Round Nose - Flat Base projectiles.

I use them because I have them. They make pretty reloads!

BTW - I didn't know Sierra was now producing a 175 grain .30 cal. Match King.

They've been making them for years.

Having a supply of match bullets, I hadn't noticed.

I wonder how a Hornady 178 gr ELD Match bullet would do in the Krag?  I'd like to try and find a bullet with better ballistics than the 220s I've been using for years in Matches.  I used the 178 ELD for my long range rounds in last years 1000 yard matches (in my 1903A3).  It's a pretty straight and flat flying bullet, and out of that 30 inch barrel, I could get it up to 2200 FPS or higher safely.  I'd like to get my groups a little tighter.

Thoughts?

Nothing beats trying it at the Range, opinions can come later!

If it makes you "Top Gun", most will follow.  :)

Nice rifle !!! And nice tight groups ... What my best favorite thing is to sit next to a shooter with a sniper rifle and a big scope and out shoot them with my Krag with original iron sights ...

Doesn't get any better than that does it?  I am sure the look on their faces is priceless.

Off the bench, my Krag has shot 5/8" groups at 100 yards, 1 3/4" groups at 300 yards, using PSteinmayer's suggested 220 grain bullet load. I just loaded some 220's using H4350, some 180's, and 168 HPBT's using IMR 4350. I hope for good weather to shoot these loads soon, I will report. I tried to post pictures of the groups, but got an error message, saying pictures were too big.
