I insert the front end of the side plate into the receiver opening at an angle and close the back end carefully until the cover touches the back of the receiver opening. Then I use a soft rubber mallet to snap the back end home to get a nice tight fit. Make sure there are no burrs on the receiver opening that might be hampering the fit.
