Thanks for the pics and info. I've measured the old plate that fit and the new one a dozen different ways and, as you said, the difference is slight.  I think I can get it to fit.
I couldn't return the plate in good conscience since I dragged a file across the metal to see how hard it was. 
It'll be a nice little, inexpensive project.
