Title: 200yd handloads
Post by Griff557 on Feb 25th, 2020 at 12:56am
Been working on some handloads for my Krag. I’ve found some good loads for 100yds so today I stretched them out to 200yds

They were 10 rd groups shot of a front rest. I should’ve quit at 5rd groups I ended up with a couple flyer/called shots that expanded my groups a bit but over all Iam more than happy with they it’s shooting

I have been reloading more .30-40 recently but haven't had a chance to go out shooting for a while.

I am working on trying to get closer to 1 MOA at 200 and 300 yards like you are. I'm pretty close to reliably getting 1 MOA at 100 yards but am at 1 1/2 - 2 MOA at 200 and 300 yards.

Looks like you've done quite well. We'll ignore the outliers. You've got a great group there.

What rear sight are you using? I prefer the M1901 with the slide raised for the nice peep holes. (I'm assuming you are using open metal sights.)

Keep up the good work!

Iam using the 1902 rear sight. I had a spare rear sight so I tried to modify the peep but it didn’t pan out so Iam shooting the “notch”.

I should’ve quit at a 5rd group they were real close to moa but I wanted to go for 10rds. A couple of the “flyers” I actually called as off shots. I get a kick out people that shoot 3rd groups and then call them sub-moa I like to shoot 5rd groups when I have a load that looks like it’ll work

Gee, almost all of my 1 round groups I shoot are MOA!

You're right. You have to shoot more rounds for real grouping of any significance.

Whig, do you have a 1 inch Gun!

My "one shot groups" are normally .30 inches.

I shoot the 1902 with the Sgt Peep.  I modified mine per CMP rules.  The original peep aperture is painfully small at approximately 0.04 dia.  I also modified a spare sight using wire gauge drills to 0.07 dia., which helped.  However, that was about as large as I could go before damaging the area of the peep.  Still, I wanted to get a little bigger so it would be easier to get back on target during the rapid fire phase.  So I built up the plate with JB Weld, and then opened the peep up to 0.1 diameter.  That really made a difference!!!

Paul,

I drilled my M1902 peep larger also but I have still found, with my eyes, the M1901 to work better.

It sure is an individual thing!

Yep... sure is.  I actually prefer the 1902, but I think it's because it's what I'm used to cause it's what I've been using the longest.  However, I know there are tons out there who prefer the 1901.

The rear sight was at “325”  I was using a 6:00 hold so the POI was about 6” above the POA. The “shoot and see” target I was using is about 12” in diameter which is pretty close to the aiming black on the SR-C targets we shoot for our 100 year old rifle matches

Paul, did you make the outside diameter of the 1902 peep larger?  I can't see the 1902 peep.  I tried the notch but it was too hard to find the front sight during rapid fire.  I shot a 485 which wasn't good enough to place but there is room for improvement if I can get this sight thing figured out.  Gonna try the 1901 peep next. One of the guys in the club finished 2nd or 3rd at Perry last year with that configuration.  Shoots spitzer bullets too.  My first match with a Krag rifle and I was pleased with how balanced it is.  I shot a 95 offhand which was my personal best with any rifle.

Bote, I found that 0.07 is about as big as you can go before the peep plate becomes so thin it's almost impossible to see.  I used JB Weld to build up the plate and then enlarged the peep to 0.10 and it's great!  The JB weld gave it enough meat to be visible too.  I'll see if I can get a picture.

Remember, if you switch to the 1901 rear sight, you also have to change your handguard!  By the way, I have a friend who shoots in the 290s.  He's shooting an 1894 (1896 configuration) with an 1896 rear sight!  The guy shoots like a robot!

I have been lucky with my eyes, at 73, I still prefer, and shoot better with a small aperature, 0.36 is my favorite. On very dark days, I go a little larger. Unfortunately, on most older, non-target guns, you can not chose your aperature size, but for me smaller is better.
