How long have you and your dog been quarantined? He’s starting to look like a sammitch to you? Where’s the other slice?

Pretty funny. What is not funny is going to the store and all the shelves are empty. What are those people doing with all that food they can not possibly use?
BR, your photo was funny because only one slice gave its life to entertain us, and maybe it had been dropped on the floor anyway. Whoops!

May have to kill a calf and have it processed. Will have to find some friends to go in with me as I can not possibly eat that much beef in a year. Yeah, those shelves were empty, also.

I’ve found no food goes wasted in a house with a big dog.  Yesterday my local Food Lion was mty of TP, facial tissues, about half the fresh meat gone and all the loaf bread but there was plenty of rolls.
Today there’s plenty of loaf bread but alas...no tp. But I stocked up last week. Prior to y2k I stocked up on everything. Didn’t buy tp for 6 months.

Yesterday, I scored two 6-packs of "Angle Soft" toilet tissue.

My son and I had stopped at his local 'Publix' grocery-store in Florida, for some fruit, vegetables, and bakery bread.
My son headed Right with a cart. I headed Left, bare-handed.

My Hunting Intuition told me to go to the 'paper-products' aisle. As I got there and looked at a lot of empty shelving, I caught movement in the corner of my eye.

A huge store clerk came gliding down Aisle 10 with a cardboard box perched on his shoulder. I stood motionless as he cut open the box. Eureka, it was TP!

I 'pulled the trigger' and calmly asked for "two packages for two customers". He willingly handed them to me from the box.

My son had come up behind me with his shopping cart.
I casually slipped 'our treasure' into the cart and we quietly exited the aisle, so as not to stampede the herd.

Feeling Lucky and liking the look of the Tomatoes, my son had got over in 'Vegetables', I went to the 'Meat' aisle and found a package of good bacon, for BLT sandwiches for a family pool-side lunch.

I am quite a Hero in my Daughter-in Law's eyes. Earlier in the day, I had fixed their Master-Bedroom toilet, that was mysteriously running at night and keeping her awake.

.... and now I brought home the Bacon and TP!

Sad, the things that become victories and coups these days, but, It's reassuring to be on good terms and valued by the people, who carry on the family name and will make important decisions, when you are near the end.

"...when you are near the end.."

"The End" of what? Toilet paper, the rear end where you would use the toilet paper or the end of the world?

Please be specific in your references.

Be a kid again!

Print this picture.

Turn-off your TV before mid-night, (or the Nightly News, if you prefer).

Tape this picture onto the TV screen.

Sing "The National Anthem" and say: "This concludes our broadcast day".

Go to bed and read a Comic Book or an Adventure Novel, under the covers with a flashlight, until you want to sleep .... and you'll be refreshed for a new day of adventure.

My mom would sometimes let me stay up late to watch the Tonight Show with Jack Parr if Oscar Levant was a guest and he would play something classical on the piano. As stoned as the man usually was he certainly could tinkle the ivories. I also remember the sign off signal and National anthem then but as a young adult here in NC the sign off music was America singing Lonely People. Kinda appropriate I guess. Nowadays everything is 24/7. Too bad. It’s hard to appreciate anything if it’s all the time, just turns into noise.

I love the "old" Vick's Vaporub formula but got real disappointed after I found out they changed it years ago and it has never smelled the same.

I have found a much better substitute- J. R. Watkins Menthol Camphor rub. Now my go-to vapor liniment.

Just thought I'd share that tidbit.

My life style hasn't changed much. Still working at a plant that makes ag tires. My favorite stores are all open, though I haven't had a "need" to go to them. Dealing with some hysteria at work as more people are being tested, but none have come back positive yet. Rest of family staying at home in our old farmhouse away from everybody.
Have been asked to supervise maintenance tonight (not my normal job) from 7pm to 3am so I'm "resting up" for it today. This is a result of the night supervisor picking up his wife in New York as she just was able to get back from the Philippines. Small sacrifice on my part as I know others have things much worse. But I hope we all make it thru OK as our nation remains resolved and strong. President Trump's goal is to have church goers back to the churches on Easter Sunday. That would be a glorious day. Of course it will be regardless.

Back home from central Florida, we took two days driving through Florida 'pan-handle', Alabama, Tennessee, Kentucky, and Indiana. Lots of trucks on the road, but, not so many cars.

We had packed breakfast & lunch stuff and picnicked at some nicely situated Rest-Stops. People at rest stops were elderly 'Snow Birds' returning Home and Truck Drivers. Everyone was calm, pleasant, and respected personal distance.

I didn't touch much at the rest areas except my food and 'wee willie winkie'.  I engaged in lots of hand washing and wiped steering-wheel and door-handles with paper napkin damp with 91% Isopropyl Alcohol.

The drive was enjoyable with lots of nice farm country, but, it's nice to be home, although Florida's 84 degrees and Sun was nicer than Michigan's 44 degrees and overcast!

I've got plenty to focus on and futz with, so self-quarantine is no big inconvenience. (I do miss seeing my Florida kids and grand-kids)!

I hope fellow KCA members are staying healthy and safe.

Take wildlife photos out the bedroom window. I have had as many as 9 on the north side of the house when I come home from the shop. This one and a larger one did not leave when I drove in, borrowed my wife's tablet and managed to take a couple of photos after struggling with the tablet for a while. The close one was about 10 feet from the window. The other one left while I was fooling with the tablet.
Had deer out there also, but never tried to get a photo.

We have an outside cat, but as far as I know he has not met the turkeys yet.

Been almost 40 years since I killed a wild turkey. Kind of handy since you process yourself and can quarter it or freeze in convenient serving sizes.
Around here it happens fairly often a turkey will develop a taste for the native chili pequins. The bird will be so hot when cooked that most could not eat it and few would enjoy it even if there was nothing else to eat. Think so hot that your fork melts.
This time of year that should not be a problem. This is the first year they have actually been staying on the place, so I am not going to bother them. They have always been heard gobbling on the neighbors places and seen once in a while crossing here. So far they make good neighbors unlike coons, possums, rattlesnakes or coyotes.

We have had critters on our property off and on. Turkey, deer, coons (not for long), 'possum, squirrel, rabbit, pheasant. Even a pine martin (I swear, which is unusual for northern Illinois). Eagles are coming back (not far from the Pecatonica River), hawks, fox, coyote, etc. Been trying, but haven't gotten a song dog yet. Called them in a few times and seen them a few times at night. Have a little gun range out back and will be shooting some muzzleloaders this weekend. Plenty to do; cut trees down, clean up yard, rake gravel back on the drive. I'm wore out thinking about it. :P Need to get a tractor, mowers, chainsaw and motorcycle in shape for the season. Never mind what I just said above. I forgot that "my old lady" has a list. :'(

Midday break. My Norwegian Elkhound and German Shepard are out in this nice weather, so there aren't much critters around. But here are some antlers found on my neighbors property near my house this week. My German Shepard "stole" one half of it off my neighbor's wagon. When my neighbor found out where it went he gave us the other half. So this deer should be lurking around here some where and probably is one of the reasons my dogs are barking at night. My fat head probably exaggerates the true spread.

Not having a problem finding things to do during the quarantine. I did have a problem with my part Native American wife (more native than Jessica Warren, anyway)…..Ishwabenon (translated to "She Who Must Be Obeyed")…..as I diverted from her list.

Was the photo taken through a window?

Looks like shooting is not an option with the neighbors house being a backstop. I use live traps as I do not want to trap my own cat.
After I trapped my own cat he has never gone back into the trap even though it is baited. Coons, feral cats, possums all get treated differently. Numerical solution involving a couple of 2s.
I am not going to release them somewhere else and make trouble for others. These pests would be trap shy if released.

So many cat photos, here is one of our previous cat. Got stuck on top of a utility pole. Parked the tractor next to it with a bowl of cat food on the roof. She finally got down. After hearing a Floresville Fire Department call for a cat up the tree, I asked the local VFD secretary what they would do if they got a call like that, his answer was lend the caller a shotgun, he was not going to climb a ladder for a cat!

"Big Bird" was viewed through kitchen window & screen.

The noise of me opening the house door and 'pussy-footing' on dried leaves gave ample warning for miss raccoon to depart. (I was not offered a shot with my .22 revolver).

If antics persist, I will hook-up Horse Fence Charger to 'switch-controlled' outdoor outlet and get some laughs!

That graph pretty much sums it up. Waiting to see how Trump's plans pans out with the states. I wonder how the graph looks on his performance on handling the situation. The liberal media is sure trying to make it out to be bad.

I got to fire a STEN Gun a couple of times, years ago. It was a fun experience.

Talk about a War Baby!

I remember an advertisement in "Popular Mechanics", (when I was about nine or ten), for a company selling DEWAT - Sten Guns, for $3.00.
My Mother wouldn't let me buy one. (Pity).

The advertised Stens were disabled, by cutting the tube that housed the bolt, but, they were complete.

The one I got to occasionally fire (as an adult) had been legally restored, (and legally owned by a licensed individual), from just such a DEWAT.

Interesting. I've been watching youtube videos myself recently because I have shot them also. Fun but very magazine sensitive. Certainly it is a waste of ammo with these fun guns!

They were made almost entirely by women. Cost like $6 a piece to make. Can't get them that cheap now.

Hickok45 has a video on this which is fun to watch.

What's the deal with Michigan and asparagus?!? Can not pick it or buy it at the store? I mentioned on another forum, that means more for the rest of us. What's not to like, more of a tasty health promoting vegetable.

Krag connection? you could carry a Krag for protecting oneself from bears while picking wild asparagus?

Forgot you all were that far behind us as to seasons. It got real cold here the last couple of days, down to 45F for couple of mornings, did not even bother covering the tomatoes. Will plant some okra pretty soon when it warms up some more. Okra really loves the heat. When it starts producing the only way to stop it is to kill it. With just a few plants last year we had all we needed and kept several friends supplied also.

This year will be a good year to plant even more stuff to keep grocery store visits down. Seems counter productive to limit visiting the garden supply store. I went a few weeks ago to get the tomato and pepper plants and it was not crowded as I was expecting. I guess millienals do not know you can grow your own vegetable. Shh! Do not tell them or they will make a run on the seeds!

In the wrong part of the country you do not need seeds, bacon pops up spontaneously. This was taken years ago just a stone throw from where we built the house. So far we have mostly fenced them out with only an occasional intrusion.
Stopping planting peanuts has been the biggest change. In the first 10 years here we killed over 300 pigs. After a while we would not bother processing them especially if they were killed too late at night or boars weighing over 80 lbs. Boars weighing over 100lbs are still edible but life is too short to put up with eating something you do not enjoy. (The meat stinks unless the boar has been castrated for at least a month)

More wildlife photos from the house. The first photo was from the door with my arm stuck out. Did not want the glass in the way. Five of the ten deer shown. The water trough is less than 50 feet from the door.

Not all is wonderful with having wildlife close by.

Second photo is why they have been described as rats with antlers. New tire on the 6030, less than 40 hours on the set. Cost $900.000 per tire plus $1500.00 installation. GRRR!!!

Need to make more Bambi burgers but the state of Texas keeps tying my hnads. GRRR!!!

Deer are very destructive here in southeastern, Ohio also. They have killed off lots of my crops in the past. I had to build an 8 ft fence around my entire garden years ago because the 4 ft fence didn't keep the damn deer out!

And we have some people in our city who ffed them and think they're soooo cute.

And accidents are quite common with deer running out in the roads. My wife has had two hit her van driving kids around. Not cheap!

Oh, well. C'est La Vie!

Rained pretty hard last night. Those are low clouds in the background (not hills). Second fence is about 75 yards from the front door. I killed 2 coyotes from the doorway when we growing peanuts. The only wildlife that did not eat peanuts were the bobcats and one mountain lion seen in that field.

Small lens on the phone makes everything seem a lot further away.

Actually, as a person who has lost two pets this spring, it's way beyond sick, and, sadly, forces me to reassess some prior opinions. Would it be equally funny if it were a dog? I suspect not. If this is "coping with quarantine", it's doing a piss-poor job of it.

Dick, I am sorry if my contributions have elicited sadness or troubled you.

Some of us engage in 'Gallows Humor'; it is a coping mechanism.
It does not mean we do not love animals or suffer loss "at every bird that falls".

Life is precious.

(I miss having horses and dogs on our place and caring for them on a daily basis.
I enjoy living with pets and farm animals, but, it would be selfish, now.
They would likely outlive me and their fate might be needless euthanasia).

Sort of hard to tell from the pen & ink sketch, but are the rifles an 1893 Marlin and a Winchester 54?  My 54 in .30-30 looks a lot like that.

And is the Krag in the weather station photo a rifle with the fore end sawn off?

Hard to tell the guns at the shooting bench. They are probably generic 'guns' for the 'American Rifleman' cover.

Only killed 2 turkeys myself. The big plus was you could quarter them and not have to cook them all at once. They were not local ones so they had not been addicted to chilies.  Once when pig hunting  I watched a turkey and a deer checking each other out nose to beak. That was pretty funny.
Saw a fox a couple of nights ago, but no pictures. They can get pretty curious and fairly close, bobcats the same way.

Interesting contrast of 'Old and New Pictures' - King Carp

IMHO - Current legitimate Protesters should re-evaluate and change their method of protest.
They are being 'played' and exploited by media, criminals, looters, out of control youths, arsonists and violent anarchists.

Mob lawlessness and anger has killed any valid message and righteous outrage.

Local leadership in some areas is proving to be very feckless.

Maybe it is time to 'turn off' some cell phone towers and break up the Circus.

(BTW - Wild Turkeys are very common in our locale. By reputation, their meat is tough and not great for eating.
There would be no challenge or 'hunt', they are always around.
I didn't poach. Domestic 'chill' turkey is a joke).

These are old wildlife photos way before covid. This red tailed hawk was seen in the cat's water bowl twice. You can see his feathers are fairly wet in one of the photos, so he was doing more than drinking. The water was on the front porch of the mobile home and both times he was seen we had to walk past him to get to a camera in the shop next door. Both times he hopped over to under a tree to have his picture taken.
He seemed to have a tick hanging from his left eyelid. May have led to his demise as a hawk was hit on the road nearby and we never saw this one again.
The bird in the power dive in post 213 looks pretty fierce and determined, this guy was kind of mellow.

The airport that is the official temp for SA is on the north side next to the hill country. We will 3 to 5 degrees hotter down here. With a 70 degree dew point the temp will feel like 110+. Little early for us SA has not hit 100 yet.

I noticed the color also, you can call it butter or margarine I have no clue what was used to color it. I am color blind but the deer? does not look right for a white tail either. My brother sent me the photo a few years ago, Edwards county is north west of Kerrville. Big country with big ranches out there. Deer feeders are common there, corn and other supplements are feed to increase body weight and antler size. Many imported deer and deer like animals are raised up there for sport hunting. The animal looks a little puzzled by the joke also.
Very little farming is done up there so no worry with antlers puncturing tractor tires so big antlers are considered a good thing.

But, if yer going to be a ploppin yer fat back end on that thing, you'll be in for a surprise. That spigot will be shoved up somewhere deep. It looks odd to me.

These things need to be anchored really well into the studs since they are wall hangers and not a floor model.

Some spineless, short-sighted, and unprincipled civic "leaders" are very calculating and remiss in performing their duty. I am flabbergasted in how low they can go!

Title: The rest of the story.
Post by FredC on Jun 26th, 2020 at 11:03pm
referencing post #192 on page 13 of this thread. I cut the antler off flush, then finished plowing the rest of the field. I found what I hope to be the rest of the antler that was embedded in the tire. If not the same one then I have another one out there waiting to poke another tire. Mostly find shed antlers near a fence, this one was in the middle of the field.
I had a repairman come out to fix the tire on the tractor. The end of the antler intruded into the tube by less than 1/8 inch. The end that the repairman knocked of the tire is about 1" long. I spent a couple hours helping the fellow get the inside bead separated from the rim and it still cost about $450.00 to repair.

The second photo is a deer I found between the shop and the road. Road shooting slob shot it from the highway. Looked in the north wall of the shop and did not find any bullet holes. There is a fairly thick pocket of brush in between that probably stopped the slug. The teeth on this guy are very worn so he was probably in his prime a few years ago but still had fairly impressive antlers when he met the slob.  At least I will not ruin another tire on him!
