New member here,I just got an 1896 krag carbine with what looks to be an 1892 bolt, it has a pin that holds in the safety and a screw holding the extractor, how do I know if it's a highnpin or low pin because the safety lever broke off at somepoint

Please post some clear close-up pictures of your "new" Krag, so we can help with your question.

"Granpa's Gun Parts", listed in the KCA Classifieds, has the 'Safety-Lever', (under Krag 1892-94), that you would need to fit your Bolt-Sleeve.
(BTW - This Vendor also sells on EBAY as 'Movieman630'. He is a fine source of parts).

I have attached his photos of the relevant early Bolt-Sleeves to help you ID yours. The difference is subtle!
The fact that your part broke is an indication of why the early pinned-safety was abandoned.

(Actually, your 1896 carbine was built and originally issued with a later style of Bolt-Sleeve. The 'obsolete' parts on your carbine are a bit of a puzzle).

Is it at all possible the bolt is original and they just swapped the sleeve or were the bolts different

If you are ordering parts, see if you can find a correct extractor screw since the one you have currently sits proud of the extractor and it should be much more flush, as in the pictures linked above. Not that important but it would look better.

'Rock' - I am going on the slightest of clues, but, I think your Krag is a 'parts gun' put together by Francis Bannerman and Sons.

Your Stock looks to be adapted from a 1903 Springfield stock. This was a practice of Bannerman's to utilize their stash of surplus parts.

The sure proof would be stock cross-bolts and a 'wood plug' closing off the bottom magazine opening.

Attached - OP's photos showing 1903 cut-off recess and cross-bolt. These features are not found on Krag stocks.

We need to see the bolt-rib and the area underneath bolt-handle to tell you what model bolt you have.

FWIW - Later bolt parts fit and function in earlier actions. A later bolt-sleeve & safety-lever can replace your current one.

Show us clear photos, (smaller than 768 KB, will post), of your front and rear sights.

A serial number will allow identifying if your Krag was ever a model 1896 carbine.

Yes you could get serviceable parts and swap them out

So going by the link I have an 1898 bolt body with a high pinned safety bolt sleeve, from the looks of the rifle when I got it it had been fired quite a bit but is that even safe with the mismatched parts

I don't consider "parts mismatch" the issue or point of danger.

I am apprehensive about making a recommendation about firing these Bannerman 'salvage Krags'.

The guys that cobbled them together certainly were not going out on a limb in 1914. They were not guaranteeing them!

The Bannerman catalog page description is kind of scary with vague mention of "fire damaged parts" and re-tempering.

Maybe the quality of parts improved, on later Bannerman Krags that used altered 1903 Springfield stocks.

I'm not a 'shrinking violet', but, some guns are 'too iffy' to risk my life, limb, and 'movie star looks'.

I would want an "experienced hand" examining this one, directly.
