Did all the 92/96's have a new 96 bolt or did some keep the 92 bolt with the extractor updated only?
Are there many observed with the 92 bolt?

How about the shorter 92 Hand guard?

You ask a good question. The 92/96's you refer to are officially called Model 1896 Krags. They no longer are Model 1892s since they have been upgraded at the armory to M1896 standards.

Having said that, the upgrade procedures were not always consistent, partly because parts were changed based on need and parts were, at other times, changed based on availability.

These M1892 Krags were also not all upgraded at the same time or even the same year.

So, to answer your question, many of these M1896s do continue to carry the original bolt with the screwed on extractor and many have the original M1892 rear sight with the correct hand guard.

But, there are numerous examples out there, many which have been posted here at times, of M1896 Krags that have almost any variety of original or upgraded parts or features.

Pictures show the best info on this and you can find many by searching through the old posts regarding M1892 Krags and M1896 upgraded Krags.

The upgraded Krag rifle can have a new stock without a cartouche, a new stock with an 1896 cartouche (the "Magazine" rifle), a M1896 rear sight, a filled ram rod channel, a flat butt pad or with a curved toe as an upgrade, a flat or rounded muzzle, a M1892 bolt and extractor or a M1896 bolt and extractor, a M1892 side plate or a M1896 side plate, and any variety of the above. Serial numbers sometimes play a part in what features an upgraded Krag may have also.

That's part of the fun and frustration of collecting Krags. The variety is almost endless!

I have been taught that the upgraded 92's might retain many of the 1892 bits and pieces. I would respectfully disagree with Whig in one thing. I believe they all had the 1892 sight replaced with an 1896 rear sight, that was, and is one of the major things separating them.

I have one such rifle and it, indeed, retains the 1892 handguard.

I have, what I believe to be, one of the 3,508 Model 1892's that were altered to Model 1896 before being issued. Many of the earlier Model 1892's were recalled from the field some time later and then altered. Below is my altered 1892 to 1896. It has an 1892 bolt, but the later extractor.

Below the picture is a circular calling in the unaltered 1892's.

You guys more nailed it.

My parkerized 92/96, 22018, has a variety of parts.  It still has the full guide rib but has the modified safety/boltshroud.  It has a later magazine gate and came with a 96 sideplate that I switched back to a 92.  1902 sight too.
