Title: Sporter Krags
Post by JimWillauer on Apr 16th, 2020 at 2:05am
I have two sporterized Krags which I have added to the list. A third which I also added belongs to a relative, who will remain anonymous. 130032 was owned by my grandfather who was born in 1906. He told me as a child that having civilian sights placed on the rifle cost him more than the rifle itself. (he lived in Philadelphia much of his life) 482179 has appears to have original military sights. 204411 was also sporterized in a similar manner to 130032. It appears to have an old original Rock Island leather sling with a EHS cartouche.

'JimWillauer' - Welcome to the KCA Forum.

If you can post some photos of your altered Krags, it will facilitate more feedback and observations from members.

It might be a good idea to post this material under the special Forum Heading for 'Sporterized and unofficial modified Krags'.

Thank you. As soon as I figure that out I will do so.

Jim - FWIW:

U.S. Krag, #130032, would have been assembled around September, 1898. It was likely built as a model 1898 rifle, but, there are some 1898 carbines around that number.

U.S. Krag, #204411, was built as a model 1898 rifle around May, 1899.
(One rifle away, Krag #204410, appears in the Springfield Research Services data on Krags found in official records, a.k.a. "SRS" data. Being close is fun, but, irrelevant and tells us nothing).

U.S. Krag, #482179, was built as a model 1898 rifle around August to September, 1903, per William Mook data.
It is a relatively high Krag serial number from near the end of U.S. Krag manufacture. It does not appear in Joe Poyer's serial # tables.

Thank you. There is a lot to learn about these rifles.
