Title: Teddy Roosevelt's Krag?
Post by butlersrangers on May 18th, 2020 at 7:05pm
'FredC' asked me a question regarding Lt. Colonel Roosevelt's Krag carbine.

Fortunately, I am reading a rather interesting work on the 'Rough Riders'.

In TR's own words, it does not appear he had one and he gave his .30-40 Winchester (a model 1895 carbine, I presume) to a 'trooper'.

He also makes it clear the regiment turned in their carbines at Camp Wikoff, (Montauk Point, Long Island, N.Y.), during the lengthy quarantine/discharge process.  :'(

(The beach photo shows some troopers with carbines, when they arrived).

Now that you mention it, sounds familiar I probably read it here about the Winchester then forgot it. If I was a collector of historic Krags I would have assigned a higher value to TR's than Clyde Barrow's.
Oh, well.
Thanks for clearing that up.

Ole Teddy favored the 1895 Winchester, and had several.  on his famous (infamous?) hunts to Africa, Teddy took a few 1895s, chambered in 405 Winchester and 30-03.

TR's '03 was SN 0009 he had custom made at SA in 1904.

Here is story from last year with details on it.

The article mentions it is in the collection at Sagamore Hill NHS. It was at SA NHS in July 2012 when I took this picture of it but I did notice it wasn't there last Oct when I was last there.

Here is the correspondence between President Roosevelt's office and the Springfield Armory to make the 1903 Springfield (pictured in mavt's reply above) to his exact specifications.

In  AFRICAN  GAME TRAILS  his colorful and descriptive account of the 1909-10 safari to E. Africa he mentioned using an 1895 in 405 Win, the  1903 which he refers to frequently as the little 30,  a 500-450  Holland & Holland double and a Fox 12ga side by side.  The H&H was gifted to him while president for this safari and he included a long list of those contributing to it from around the world.  No Krags but if I remember correctly his son Kermit used an 1895 in 30-40 and another in 405.

Here is an NRA article on Teddy's Winchesters, including a statement about his 1895 Winchester in 30-40 Krag he took to Cuba.
