Krag Italian Walnut

I've had this rifle for almost 35 years. The serial # (473246) indicates it was made in 1903. I wanted to replace the 1898 sight with a 1901 but was waiting to find an original handguard for the 1901 rear sight. Found one locally for $45 and took a chance. The wood on the hand guard is much lighter than the rifle. I think the handguard is original, the rivets look good, rather than a letter there are numbers stamped on the underside. Is it Italian walnut? Should I stain it to match the rifle? Thanks
