SA 1898 Found In Garbage......Keeper?????

I found a Springfield Armory Model 1898 in the garbage at work today. The serial number is 419539. The rifle has some condition issues. The stock is completely broken about 2 inches behind the trigger guard. The metal is in nice shape. Action on the bolt seems good. It is also missing the sling. The barrel is not cut down.

I tried to do some research online, but decided to consult the experts. I would like to make a project out of this, and restore it.

My question is.....can I get an original stock replacement? Is it worth it to do so? Where can I get one? How much should I pay?

Ultimately.......Should I just put it back in the garbage?

Any help is much appreciated.....Thank you!

Original stocks are available from time to time on ebay, auction arms and gun broker. One will likely cost you $200-$300, although I haven't been watching lately. Repros can be had from around $150(need fit and finish) to $300 drop in. If you keep your eyes open and are patient you can likely do better on the $. If you don't want to get into it drop me a line and I will take over the project!!
Regards,
Ned

I have personally witnessed shattered stocks be repair to like new condition. If you have both pieces of the stock check out Robert Fulton of Glenrock, Wyoming. I know him personally and he does excellent work. Please let me know what you decide to do.

Hey, I've got a 1898 that is missing a bolt, wood foregrip, and rear sight, so if you decide not to do the project and want to sell it for parts, let me know! Thanks,
Chuck
