Just fell into a Krag...need info

My dad just dug a model 1898  30-40 out of the basement. The best he can remember is he bought it in 1964 from an "old guy" he worked with for $25. It is in very good condition from barrel to stock. It is marked US-30 on the barrel. Serial number is 101280. It has a 4x Burris scope off-set mounted. It seems to be fully functional-waiting to get ammo to fire it. Any insights and information would be greatly appreciated as this isn't a model/make I'm familiar with.

Thanks.

Something does not sound right. ANY 101xxx would be a Model 1896 (the Model 1898 did not start until around 109000 - and - military Krag barrels (unlike those for the 1903) are completely un-marked.

Do you perhaps have an 1895 Winchester lever action? Many were made in .30-40, their barrels ARE, I believe, marked ".30 U.S." when so chambered, and, an offset scope WOULD be required there as well (both guns eject fired cases straight up). Sadly, the scope pretty well destroys any collector value, if the mounting was accomplished by drilling holes.

Certainly not a lever action. It is a bolt. Dad thought it may be a Remington chambered in 30-40, but just not sure. We're working on the scope issue currently to see if it is in original spots. I'll keep working it up and see what I can come up with.

Does it have a side box magazine or a detachable mag in the bottom of the receiver?
