Another Krag owner

Hi folks.  I have read the posts on this forum and found them to be very helpful.
I have a Krag that I bought several years ago.  Through this forum I know that I don't have an original carbine.  However, I do have a very nice carbine.

It has a ser # of 178XXX.  The receiver has Springfield 1898 on it.  The barrel is 20" long.  The cartouche on the left side of the stock has a date of 1899.  There is a U on the handguard ring.  The barrel, stock and bolt look newer than the receiver.  There is a C on the right side of the rear sight.

My question is.  Does it have any value.  I am going to retire soon and am cleaning out my safe.  Some things I will keep and some I will not.

The other question is how do I add more than one Picture?

From that one picture, the barrel appears to be normal length (22") or very close to it, and, the front sight looks to either be original. or very close to it. How are you measuring the length? As to the pictures, I THINK you'll just have to make multiple posts.

I measured from the end of the barrel to the beginning of the top forearm.  I guess I measured wrong.  It is 22"  thanks.

Here is another Picture

Picture of the cartouche.  This gun looks almost new, except for the receiver and magazine.

Not sure how to put this tactfully, but I believe you have an intentionally faked "carbine", deliberately made to deceive - I hope you did not pay a great deal for it. That barrel is not original to that receiver, nor does that number date to 1899. The cartouche does not look "right", nor do the grasping grooves. If the barrel (bore) is good, I'd sell it as shooter; it sure is pretty, but I'm nearly certain it isn't "real".

Thanks Dick,

No I didn't pay much for it. I bought it 10 years ago. I suspected when I bought it that it may be a put together gun.  I may part it out or shoot it myself.
