I just picked up this M1898, and found this forum, I am new to these rifle so any information about this particular rifle would be helpful. The left side of the receiver is marked Model 1898 Springfield armory, 447xxx.  There is a cartouche (sp?) on the sock above and slightly behind the trigger and a "U" on the band attached to the front sling mount.  The barrel is 30" and all parts appear in good condition. My guess is the stock was cut at some point.  Any thoughts on when the rifle was made or any other information would be nice.

Also assuming the stock was cut any thoughts on restoration. Since it probably does have much value I might try to make it look like it did when it was new, just to amuse myself.

You'll need to find an upper band, band screw, stacking swivel, and swivel screw. Looks like that might be an original sling, but improperly installed.

Stock extensions are available from a number of sources and can be joined invisiblely under the lower band as in Parashoter's post. With the uncut barrel, yours is a perfect candidate for this if you choose. Should be a fun project!!

I think they are about $75-$90. Not sure how much fitting is required - certainly some - but the process must work because there have been a LOT of rifles restored. So many in fact that I now ask to check under the barrel band of any rifle I'm looking at which shows even a hint of difference in wood color, etc. If the seller says no, I walk.
