Getting a sporter

Hello all,

I am new to the forum, just joined because I was offered a Krag sporter that was converted sometime during the 50s.  Going to take it.  It is in decent shape despite the sporterization.  A bit of gunk on the receiver makes the info there hard to read but I think it says US  Model 1893 Springfield Armory serial number 1839XX.  The bore is a bit worn but still shiny with distinct lands and groves. There is some built translucent brown gunk on the receiver but it seems to chip off easy with light prodding with a dental pick (using the round sides so I don't scratch/gauge the metal). The metal under the gunk is bare, without any bluing, as I suspect this was removed when the original scope mount was attached. The mount is gone, as are the military sights (barrel looks cut down to about 22"  or so and the screw holes for the rear military sights are filled), the receiver is tapped for a offset scope mount so I will probably be putting a Weaver offset base on it.  The stock is mostly OK but could use some love and maybe a refinish job.  Trading a Kel-Tek SU-22 for it as I have plenty of .22 LR rifles.

Mostly I want it due to the unique action and magazine system. Lately I have been getting into old war veteran guns. Got a bunch of Mosin-Nagants, a K-31, a brace of 1898 Mausers and a MAS 49/56.  I think all guns deserve a good home to live out their days and be admired for their design and function. I still like my semi-autos but there is something about the old bolt actions too.

If any of you have any info about this rifle's past or corrections please let me know.  I hope to do a project restoring this weapon to something worth of itself.  I am a hobby gunsmith and enjoy learning the intricacies of firearms.  Cheers.

Welcome! She's an 1898 under that gunk and if it's in working order, will be a hoot to shoot! Pretty much anything 'Krag' you can think of has been posted at one time or another so read a bit and ask questions if you are still in want.

Yeah, I cleaned some more of the gunk off and she does say model 1898 under it all. Part of the 8 was obscured by the gunk, finally cleared it off enough to see all the marking today.  Anyone know if brake cleaner/gun scrubber is safe enough to use on the bluing? It would make it easier to strip it off. Looks like congealed Hopees or gun oil to me.  I do not want to damage the bluing that is there as it is still in very good condition except where it was removed for the scope mount that used to be there.  Thanks for the welcome.
