Question for Ned Butts: "Nazi Occupation Carbine"
Mar 19th, 2010 at 1:38am
Print Post
I posted several pics a few weeks ago of a Krag that I found in my home out East.  Could you and or others view the pics and offer your comments on whether the piece may have been altered post manufacture.  I was wondering if this Krag is common or not so common.  The butt plate had been replaced with a recoil pad (butt plate is gone) and the rear site looks to be "jerry rigged" (no pun intended).  Other than the items mentioned above, it looks original to me.  It does not have matching serial numbers on major parts.  I would like to use it on a range.  Many thanks in advance to anyone who could assist me with this. Sorry to lose track of this subject, I have been a little preoccupied the last few weeks.
The occupation carbines are uncommon here, your rifle has been heavily modified post Nazi modification. The markings give it slightly extra value.
The forend has been cut back, it should have a hand guard around the rear sight and as you suspected the rear sight has been "jerry rigged".
Norwegian rear sights turn up occasionally on the auction sites. "Correct" wood is likely nonexistent, but some "creative wood working" on your part could make it look close. Hand guard and bands are going to be nearly as hard to find, so any restoration would extremely difficult and expensive, likely much more than the rifle would be worth. I would have the head space checked and the shoot it!! I would only use basic ammo, no high performance or "+p" type. I have been shooting my Norwegians with standard loads for a number of years now with no ill effects. Have a gunsmith check it out and enjoy.

Many thanks for the info....... Are there any pics available where I can see what the correct rear site and complete original stock looks like?  I am a woodworker and would like to give the stock restoration a good run for it. Smiley Smiley Smiley

By the pictures it looks like you got a "Stomperud" nazi krag. They were made out of the m94 but stock cut down approx 18 cm fore end, and got a butt plate with no trap-door as the m94. A picture of the buttplate would help to finally id the krag, but from the pic of front sight and shape of barrel there it looks like one of this "Stomperuds". (Later i read it had a new pad mounted, so not pos to ID from the buttplate.)You miss front and rear barrel bands, the handguard and the steel attached to it. You also miss the two barrel band spings. Also the front sight seem to have had the bayonet attach cut of. Also you miss the rear sight, looks like yours is the rear of the original and a sight put on top of it. Small detail, you might also miss one screw fro the rear sight. The hole should still be there, or is filled? You also might be missing the rear sling attachment? Caliber is 6.5x55.

Thanks for your responses!  The butt plate is gone on the rifle stock.  There is a small drilling some 2 inches ahead of the rear site.  Appears as though the  forward screw is broken off.  Rear sling strap attachment is missing.  Just in front of the front site, the outside muzzle diameter is smaller than the barrel diameter behind the front site.  Is this a modification for a different bayonet mount compared to other Krag bayonet mounts.  When you refer to a handguard, are you refering to the portion of the wooden stock that covers the top surface of the barrel around the rear site?  Is the shortened stock a post manufacturing modification or were they designed this way (I wasn't clear on your response to that point).   Wink Wink Wink

Hi.
I've invetigated more. Out of the serial, marked Nb yours is not a "stomperud". Stomperuds were marked in the Nc series. I was missled by the front sight and barrel dia there. Seems like your front sight been de-soldered, cut down at rear up to sight base, barrel cut and sight resoldered. Yes the handguard is the wooden pice on top of barrel round the rear sight. The butplate on yours should then be simular to m94. Total of 2600 were made like yours, and 1000 in the Nb series in 1944. So yours should look like the one Ned Butts referred to here: (You need to Login to view media files and links). The other listed (You need to Login to view media files and links) is supposed to be a Stomperud, but total wrong stock as it is made from a norwegian krag carabine 1912 stock. The stomperuds were plain m94 that only had the front cut down 18cm. This wrong reconstructed went for a lot of $, so you have a pretty good margin on restauration on yours i would say. Biggest problem is perhaps getting new barrel with correct length.
