M1899 Carbine "engineer use"

Hi All, I just purchased a correct '99 that has  sling swivels. G/B 165426051 for photos. Frank Mallory and Joe Poyer both mention this, but William Brophy's book does not. Mallory states, on page 105,  that 372 were modified at Fort Levenworth. Anyone have any additional info about this? Thanks, John

As far as I know, there would be NO way to positively identify one of the Ft. Leavenworth carbines, or any other 1899 having them mounted now. Joe Farmer is in the midst of some HEAVY research, which I hope he will ultimately publish, and HAS found indisputable evidence that swivel application to 1899 carbines, under "government auspices", was considerably more widespread than once thought.

Having said that, I personally prefer my carbines without same, and would NEVER pay any premium (thinking I had found a rare variation) for something that "bubba" can easily make in a couple of evenings. Even worse is that some (perhaps all) of the work WAS done at regional facilities, and the usual protection of "if the workmanship isn't perfect, SA didn't do it", doesn't apply here.

Just my $.02 - it isn't going to settle the sling/no sling issue on 1899s. Others will have to make their own choices - but just don't pay a big premium!  Smiley

John:

I recently sold one of those 1899 carbines (modified for gun sling) that I had for about 30 years.  With the carbine, I received the Rock Island 1902 gun sling (stamped as such) so I was reasonably sure the carbine was a Ft. Leavenworth modified carbine.  This 1902 sling was made specifically for this mod.  Untill someone comes out with a more definitive work about these modified carbines, I don't think I'd pay any premium for them.

Hi, Seller did not claim anything about swivels. I thought it might fall into that grouping. Overall in good condition at that price. Check the photos. Thanks for responses. (You need to Login to view media files and links)

That's a NICE carbine for $750 - you did VERY well. However, I do have to wonder about the rear swivel - It SEEMS to be further forward than the regulation placement. I THOUGHT that SA sent out jigs to the modifying arsenals so that everything would be uniform.

A good example of why I recommend, and follow, the "no swivels" line of thought. Nice as the gun is, the unusual swivel placement would bother me. Very sorry to rain on your parade. Now I wish I'd looked at the GB pics sooner
