Howdy from the middle of Va....

I just bought my first Krag. (My first American military rifle! Cheesy) I believe it to be an NRA carbine but I have no paperwork so for the sake of this conversation we'll assume it's not. Anyway I picked it up locally for $195.
The stock is broken and missing the butt plate. The bore is fair to good shape I would say.

So my question is this - Did I pay too much?  Huh

Welcome!!  The buttplate is no big deal, but how bad is the stock? If it cannot be fixed, then you surely got no bargain. However, if you shop VERY carefully for a replacement, you could still break even, so long as you just planned to use it as a shooter/plinker.

As you are apparently aware, the "NRA" model is a REAL pitfall. Since ANY qualified gunsmith could make one, to realize any premium you MUST have the original bill of sale.

That's what I thought. I was thinking I'd get a Boyds "rifle" replacement stock and cut it down. But then again I think the stock can be fixed, I had planed on just keeping it as a shooter/plinker as you described. Oh well. Undecided
