I need your expertise!

I've got what appears to be a "sporterized" 1898 US Krag on the way to me~~~might be one of those infantry models cut down many years ago to carbine length. It utilizes the original stock (also probably cut down) and I see where the magazine cut-off lever used to be~~~it is missing, of course.

My question: how hard is it to re-install the cut-off? I can
get a cut-off assembly, but I have no idea on how to install
it. Is this a job for a competent gunsmith, or is it a job
that I could perform myself?

I will greatly appreciate your help. Thank you!

You can install the cutoff yourself, VERY easily, with a light hammer and a small block of wood. If you cannot find one here, try the parts suppliers listed at (You need to Login to view media files and links)

There are three different cutoffs, so make sure you give the parts people your serial number.

Thank you, Dick!

I'm still waiting for the rifle to show up, but I'll begin checking these resources. I take it that it just taps in (lightly w/oil?) bolt open, easy does it? I should have learned more with a previous Krag that I had, but I am usually overly cautious. I don't want to break anything.
Thanks again for the reply!

Thanks for reminding us of that reference!! It is pretty simplistic in spots, but it certainly is thorough, and is invaluable for some of the tricky bits like bolt removal.

I'd forgotten that the spring needed to be pried back - haven't bought a rifle w/o the cutoff in a LONG time. Smiley
