Hello to all and merry christmas. This is my first post, i love this forum there is so much info here. What i would like to know is the starting charge in my reloading manual ok for the old krags or should i step back even more on the charge?
This is my first krag and i am hooked this thing is sweet. It is sporterized but i still love it. It is the 1898 model made in 1899 acording to the serial # with all metal in very good shape and a after market stock and scope mt. I will try to get some pics up some time.

Thanks Nick

There is a little more information needed before anybody should answer on a touchy subject such as this. Has a competent gunsmith looked the gun over for you? Cracked lugs may be rare, but possible. Have you shot any commercial rounds through it already? Some reloading manuals do not suggest going below the starting powder charge as it can lead to other issues.
My Krag was also "sporterized" by shortening the original stock and having a 23-1/2" barrel before I obtained it. I would like to know its history, but will never know. After my Krag was checked out I used the loading tables and stuck with IMR4350 and Hornady 180gr RN interlock. Will you be using your Krag for hunting? I'd like to harvest a deer with mine, it would make a good brush gun.

Yes the gun shop i bought it from checked it out, i have not shot it as of yet wanted to make sure of a good safe recipe for here. I do plan on hunting with this , i have many old rifles mainly mausers this is my first krag.  I very good friend of mine bought a norwegian krag at the same shop and when i seen this i had to have one. Mine is  a springfield not the norwegian but i will find one of them also. I tried to post pics but its not working. The powder i have in stock are imr 3031,4064,4320 and hodgdon h 380, most are listed for the krag just wanted to make sure this is not too fast of powder for the old rifles. The barrel is still 24".

Thanks Nick

Get the load tables (bound copies are available online) and be mindful of the barrel length indicated. Commercial ammo is loaded right up to the "maximum" loads allowed in the tables so it may not be the best choice to start with! For target shooting, the added velocity usually exceeds that which is most accurate. It's best to work up loads in steps. Of those powders you listed, the 4064 (IMR) can provide good load densities for 150 grain or 165 bullets - otherwise you'll want to get some 4350 (IMR) for the 180-220 range bullets. Good Luck!
