1894 Springfield questions

I recently found out that my grandfather has an 1894 Springfield Armory. The serial number is 6634. It was his father's before he got it. Anyway, unfortunately the stock was broken long ago and replaced with a carbine stock. i was wondering if someone could tell me what i would need to restore it back to original. i'm not concerned about resale value, as this will stay in our family for as long as possible. i just want to return it to its original condition for my grandfather.

That's going to be a hard to find, and very expensive, item, especially if the rifle was never converted to 1896 specs (most were).

Is the barrel still full 30"? Is the muzzle crowned, or just flat? Does the extractor have a small pin on top, and is receiver notched at the right rear to accept the pin as a bolt hold-open device? Flat muzzle and no pin would mean you'll need a flat butt stock, with groove for cleaning rod below the barrel. You'll also need the rod, and complete upper band assembly. I've seen ONE loose M1892 stock in 40+ years. Rods simply do not exist, if you need a full-length one, you have have to get a repro. The M96 alteration has the usual 3-pc. rods in butt.

Check out my website (click my ID). #2546 is a completely original Model 1892 Rifle. #6692 has been altered to M1896 specs. Note the numerous detail differences.

thanks for the info. i didn't realize that there were so many different configurations. i didn't notice the muzzle, and the other alterations i had no idea. After looking at some of the pictures on this site i noticed that the rear site is the 1896 version. if it has been converted would that make it any easier to find the parts that i would need? i found a site that sells the upper hand guard and the cleaning rod. i'm not REAL concerned about the parts being the original parts from the 1890s. i would just like it to look original again. would it be possible to find a gunsmith or someone to make a stock for me. it seems to me that is the hardest part to find, but i could be wrong. i'll try to get some more info and pictures and post them. i appreciate all the help you've given me already.

If you are just trying to make it "look good", then a regular Model 1896 stock would fit. They do show up from time to time, usually for around $300. Handguards are around $150.

I believe a repro stock would cost more and would still have to be final-fitted and finished. IMHO, most repro handguards are crap and should be avoided wherever possible.

That eliminates the need for the full length rod - in fact, there is no real reason even to have the sectional type in the butt.

Upper bands are readily available. Check out (You need to Login to view media files and links)

I do ask ONE favor, for future owners/collectors: if you are just going to put "incorrect" parts together for a wall-hanger, please don't modify them in any way, so that they do not lose their utility, and the work may be undone down the road.

i'm fairly certain it still has the 30in barrel. i didn't measure it, but if i had to guess i'd say it's still the full length. i'll try to post pictures as i get them. since I'm extremely new to all this, i'm sure that the pictures can tell the story better than i can.

i don't plan on modifying it in any way. that's why i'm trying to find out what i would need to at least make it look right. obviously if i could find the original parts that would be best. i don't intend on it to be solely a "wall hanger." i plan on it being fully functional. to me, it makes little sense to own a functioning firearm and never fire it...

You know I am joking, but which SE Springfield are you talking about, and when?
