Hi.

First, a small correction of the time for occupation og Norway, it startet April 9, 1940, ended May 8, 1945.
From what I know the serial for NC stamped receivers in 1944 were supposed to bee numbered with NC60, ended with NC1200, but in lowest known were 673, highest 1095.
Yours might be correct, but also an "copied" one , as the grinding of bolt and then stamping new number, I've never seen before. That is not that it could have been done, but it is uncommon, or never seen.

Digging the history: I've read more about this Stomperud production. One plausible and perhaps correct issue regarding this krag, is that during the years 1946-1951, a number of 1572 krags were mod to the short krag. Some of these were with the original 1944-NC serial. I therefore suspect that this krag originally were a m1894 production, that later were converted at Kongsberg to a short Stomperud.

mussonor,
Thanks for your evaluation. I can see the difference on the flat of the bolt lever where the serial number is, on this one, compared to the one on my Norwegian marked 1916 serial number 9881.
Are there any other markings or parts that you can see in the photos that would date this before 1946?
Are there any parts of the rifle that I did not take a picture of that could help you better identify it?
Thanks again,
Dave

How long is the cleaning rod on this one? Is the rod simular to the carabine one? If so, that and looking more into the pictures I will say that this one must be a krag from the "production" after ww2, where krags were assembeled or revised with Stomperud barrels. It look pretty good, almost not used. They were some rougher in finish (mostly the stocks) then those made years earlier.
Take well care of it.

I guess I have to ask, how do I remove the cleaning rod? It will not turn clockwise & if I turn counter clockwise I unscrew a short piece 8-5/8" including male threaded end.
Sorry, I have never tried to remove it.
Dave
Ok. I removed the cleaning rod on the 1916 and it is the same length 8-5/8" rod as the 1916.

Hi.

To find the best out of what this one has for origion, lets list some facts:

- Stompertuds introduced in November 1944- Lowest serial known, NC#673
- Stomperuds assembeled in 1946-1951. Among these known that former NC-m1894 were mod to Stomperuds
- Normally the nut for cleaing rod were moved 18 cm back so the original m94 rod could be used. But there is also sead that the shorter rod were used when nut not moved. This was probebly done for those assembeled 46-51. Your rod seem to been a m94 that have been cut to M1912 karabine lenght, and drilled the hole for thightening.
- The stock is not drilled out in rear for the cleaning oiler bottle, screwdriver etc. Not done as not needed for the private use they were assembeled for.
- Receiver stamped the controller Captain Haakon Finne, controlling krags between 1912-22.
- The buttplate serial is for a krag made 1917

There is no 100% conclution for this, but historical facts compered to those features shown on yours, make me to conclude that it is one of those Stomperuds assembelled between 1946-51.

Mussonor,
Thanks for all the history and information.
I tried to put the 1916 cleaning rod in the 1944, but it would not fit. I got my digital caliper and measured the diameter of each rod.
The 1916 rod is 5.62 mm thick.
The 1944 rod is 5.45 mm thick.
I also measured the outside diameter of the end of the barrels.
The 1916 barrel end measures 15.12 mm.
The 1944 barrel end measures 15.08 mm.
I'm not sure if any of this means anything, but just thought I would mention it.
Thanks again. All your information is much appreciated.
Dave
Sorry, one more question.
Is there a record / data base of NC numbers on Krags made between 1946-1951?

Hi.

The nominal dimention of the rod is 7/31", or 5.55mm. Finding rods above og bellow within 0.1mm tollerance is what I would find acceptable.
The Stomperud barrel front dia is done so the front band for the m94 rifle fit the barrel dia, and that the front sight from the m94 fit. The dia and contour of the carabine 1916 is differerent from the rifle, only the muzzle dia of nominal 15mm is the simmular.
There must be a record of what serial were made to Stomperuds in 46-51 at Kongsberg, but I do not have it, and do not know were to get hands on it.
