This is my first Krag.  I generally concentrate on pre-war Smith & Wessons, but have a soft spot for carbines.
I took a chance on this one from a live auction.  Not knowing more about them, I didn't bid much($450).  The only part I see that for sure isn't right is the rear sight staff.  It's definitely from a rifle.  The sight base looks to be an original 'C' stamp.  I'm not sure about the slide.  My poor pic makes it look like the front sight has been re-attached, but I don't think that's the case.  It's just shadowing and grime.  Looks like it once had a sight protector on it.  If there is any question, I can get out the good camera, tripod and macro lense.
Serial number is 127814 which seems to fall in range.  Muzzel is properly crowned and shows expected wear and some peppering.  Front sight looks to be original.  Stock is definitely an orignial carbine and is properly cartouched '1898'.  Handguard and band look to be correct.  It shows plenty of outside wear with lots of mottling and a few small pits plus all the screws are buggered, but the bore is near perfect.  I can't wait to shoot it.

Thanks in advance for any further info or comments.

At 450, that Carbine was a steal, you are a lucky man. Yes the ser# is in fact in range (however as I am still learning I may be wrong, but I believe they go from 104k-130k or so), front sight is correct, saddle ring is right. Stock seems correct. Not too savvy with rear sights. Might be correct, might not. Cartouche behind the saddle ring is correct. Make sure the barrel is 22". All in all, I would say it is a carbine.

Dick Hosner, 98src, or either Mr. Butts will let you know the exacts im sure. They helped me alot identifying my Krag.

Good luck

Does not show up in the SRS data that I have ( but some one else may have some later info ). Aside from that, I would have given $1500 for it ( that's what I gave for mine and it isn't in SRS either ). It looks very "real" to me. Grin

That would seem to be a super buy. Three other 127xxx carbines are known, but NO 128xxx or 129xxx. Then there are a few in the 130-131-133xxx range, and that's it. The major group is 118-120xxx.

The stock cannot be altered from another model, so it is real. The only "issue" is that the rear sight leaf and slide are from a rifle. I didn't like the front sight until you clarified that the photo was no good. But, if it were faked with malice, the price would be around $3000, so you are still OK, and can well afford to fix the sight, though it will cost as much as the gun. Congratulations.
