Krag 1895 Dated Carbine

Hello all,
I'm new to this forum and would like to start by asking a question about a Krag Springfield Armory carbine that I picked up today.  The overall condition appears to be quite nice for an item as old as this is.  It contains the date 1895 exluding the word model.  The barrel measures 22 inches in length.  This Krag has a very nice sporterized stock, which I'll probably change out if the proper carbine stock ever becomes available.  Would anyone have an idea where I might start looking for a carbine stock?   All in all a very nice and very clean Springfield Krag.  Hope to get to know a good number of members on this forum.
Mike

Gunbroker.com is a good place to start, but finding just a stock there will be close to impossible. Im sure a few krag experts will tell you a more personalized site for such an item. Sorry to see the rifle was drilled and tapped. I have a 1898R that has been sporterized. I also have a 1894R that has been nickel plated for some odd reason, however I believe it to be complete. Havent had the chance to snap a few pics for feedback yet. To get the best answers you need photos of the front sight post, rear sight aperature, the bolt, as well as the stock from butt plate to fore end.

A few humble experts on here will be Dick Hosner, 98src, Tom Butts, as well as many others that are currently slipping the mind.

I am just a beginner with knowlege about the Krag. I know the Krag is a phenomenal Deer rifle, as I have hunted with mine for 18 years. It is also quite accurate even with store bought ammunition.

Best of luck, and I hope you post more pictures of your Krag

Hi,
I've discovered since posting this message that my Krag is missing quite a few essential parts.  The rear sight has been replaced with a commercial Refield, the bolt has been modified (slight bend) and of course the stock.  I think I'm going to leave this one as is.  I don't believe restoring it would accomplish much.  Besides, it looks great as it is.  Thank you for your response.

If its a true Carbine and not cut down, it would be as they say "worth its weight in gold". Restored to its factory configuration. Gunbroker does have Krag parts. An original stock (in my own opinion) will be the toughest to secure. a bolt assembly wont be that difficult (you said yours has been manipulated). The correct rear sight might take some time but not hard to find.

Do yourself the favor of at least locating the parts needed to restore your Krag to factory. It may be worth the time invested. The 1895 carbine isnt as common as the 1898. I seen 1898 carbines go for $1700 Complete and unaltered from a factory configuration. In your case it may be well worth the effort to at least have the parts to do so. The Krag is also very easy to work on, so swapping parts wont be a pain.

good luck,
Ken
