Was $400 too much to pay for a 1896 C rear sight?

I just agreed to buy a complete correct 1896 C rear sight for $400 for my 1898 Carbine (shown in a previous discussion thread).  Was that a fair price?  My existing sight is a C base with a rifle ladder.  Is the C base worth much without the correct ladder?  Just wondering if I can recoup anything by selling the take-off sight.

Only if you bump into one for $200.  Even then only if you don't get $400 back out of it.

The only one who was able to answer that question was you and you've done so.  "It was worth $400 to me to complete my 1898 carbine" is what you thought and so it's what you did.

Don't sweat it.  It's not as if you'll only ever be able to get $20 for it.  When the economy picks up you can dump it and likely make a profit.  Then you'd have to pay $500 to replace it so you'd be back in the same boat.

So, no.

I saw one go for $600 once. Would I pay that, or even $400, probably not. One thing to consider is if you're into the carbine cheap enough (before the site) what does it matter? Compare your total investment, to what the retail value may be. The rest is irrelevant.
