How can you check function of cut off ?

Is there a way to check if the cut off is working on a Krag rifle /carbine without using ammo in the magazine?
Iam familiar with the cut offs on the 1903 Springfield , and early Enfields ( I know they  are different animals) but with their  cut off on you cannot push down the follower with your finger .
An easy way to check the working condition of the cut off on a Krag would be great prior to a purchase in a gun show situation .

Open the bolt and look inside the magazine while operating the cutoff. You will see its business end in operation. It's extremely self-evident once you learn where to look.

FWIW, the cutoff on the M1903 doesn't inhibit the magazine follower. It simply prevents the bolt from retracting far enough to engage a cartridge from the magazine.

Hi,
I opened the bolt and moved the cut off lever but did not see anything move in the magazine . I have a schematic on the Krag rifle from Numerich and it shows the cut off assembly shaft which is part of the outside lever. I do not see a cut off plunger or spring in the magazine. Iam looking at the inside of the sideplate area.
Thank you for the help.

You're looking in the right area. You won't see a plunger or spring, just a shaft that is half cut away. When you put the cut off in one position the shaft is flush with the wall, in the other position it protudes and blocks the cartridges from moving. It is just ahead of the bolt head when the bolt is retracted. If you take the bolt out it is a little easier to see.

Hi Jim,
I will give it a try after work.
I just cannot feel or see any shaft on the inner wall of the side plate even with the loading door open.
I will read over the method of taking out the bolt a few times. The extractor is new to me based on my 1917,M1 , 1903 and Enfield  Iam new to the Krag world .
I plan to post a few pics of my 1894 rifle and 1896 carbine.
Thank you for the help.

It's not in the sideplate. It's in the receiver.

(You need to Login to view media files and links)

If you can't see this with the lever in one or the other position, maybe someone cut off your cutoff!

Hi Parashooter,
Your picture is great. It clears everything up!
When my 1894 rifle and 1896 carbine has the cutoff knob in the down position ,I can see the cut off shaft behind a plate in the receiver. Placing the cut off knob in the up position retracts the shaft. Therefore when in the up position the cut off would be retracted (off) and the magazine would be allowed to feed ammo into the breach? correct?
Thank you very much for your help.
Dave

ON and OFF terms are relative to the magazine. OFF = No feed. Which way is "up" depends on the vintage of the cutoff - ordnance department changed direction after a fairly short time in service. Some were replaced with the new style, a few survived with the original design.

Had to laugh, Parashooter - your posts are always so accurate! But, you finally muffed one, a little.

"Up" is always "up". I know that what you meant to say was which way is "on" varies with the vintage, but had to chuckle anyhow!

Happy to provide the occasional chuckle. I'm often guilty of not knowing which way is "up". This may be why I stopped skydiving.

To clarify for Kavorka, it should read - 'Which mode (magazine ON or OFF) is selected when the lever is "up" depends on the vintage of the cutoff . . .'

Hi Paratrooper,
Thanks again for explaining the function and terms used with the Krag cut off relative to the magazine.
I plan to take the 1894 rifle out to the range this weekend.
Everyonr has been so helpful.
