Seeking Help From The Well Informed...

I've recently been given a US Springfield Krag. It belonged to my great grandfather. I'm not looking to sell it or anything like that. I'm just curious about it. Been looking online for the past 3 days and can't seem to find a picture of one that looks like it. To me, that means it's either rare or modded. I'm thinking the latter. Stumbled across this site and if ever there was a place to ask for here, it's here for sure. It's dated at 1896 but the SN starts with a 92XXX and according to Oldguns.net and unless I made a mistake, it said it was an 1898. Also, from the pictures I've seen, the hand....grip? area doesn't have as distinct of a groove as others. Sorry, I'm not savvy to rifle terms yet. Any information on this will be greatly appreciated. I've taken a few pictures to better assist whomever can help. If a specific angle is required, I can do my best to accommodate.

What you have is an 1896 rifle that has been modified a bit.  The barrel looks to still be full length, 30".  The stock has been cut down and, yes, it looks to have been sanded.  It is missing the handguard.  Besides that, it looks to be in good shape.

If you go to our photos page on the website, you can see what an original long rifle looked like.

Best regards,
Tom

I've got an 1896 pretty close to what you have in terms of being "sporterized". The Krag was very desirable as army surplus being an inexpensive smokeless powder rifle in the early to mid 1900's, especially in carbine form. As the carbines were scarfed up some dealers and home hobbyist would take a krag rifle and cut it down to carbine style. Happened a lot much to the dismay of current Krag enthusiasts. I enjoy mine all the same and I'm sure you will, also.

Excellent. Thank you for the information. Do you know of any online, detailed explanations on how to disassemble and clean them? I don't want to damage anything accidentally.

Thanks again.

Please read all of this before tear down!!!

on the sling swivel is a screw, remove the screw to take the barrel band off. It may be a little rough to move, just try wiggling a bit and it should slide right off.(NOTE^^ if there is a letter U on your barrel band it should be on the same side of the rifle as the magazine door when reassembling)

after that, there are 2 screws on the trigger guard, the rear is longer, so it shouldnt be difficult to reassemble. after that is compete, the reciever assy. and barrel should come off the stock after a bit of wiggling. At this point the trigger guard can be removed from the stock as well.

If you point the action and barrel "down range" open the bolt, there is a long ejector arm on top of the bolt, with a bit of muscle, lift it a bit and slide it to the right. The bolt should at that point spin a bit further counter clockwise, it will line the locking block up with the opening, the bolt should slide right out. (NOTE^^ some people prefer to take the bolt out before removing the stock)

On reverse side of the magazine door there is a screw, remove the screw and the opposing door can be removed (screw is found on the same side as the model and serial #)
I use an unsharpend pencil to push the door off from inside the action, it wont damage the metal that way.

Never had a reason to remove my magazine door yet, as well as tear down the bolt, or remove the trigger.

to reassemble, pretty much just reverse these instructions.
that should get you started.
good luck

You can go to www. surplusrifle.com, find and click on the U.S. Krag Rifle or Carbine link on the left of the screen, then click the disassembly instructions under the maintenance section on the right.  That is a PDF file that you can download.  It's got great pictures and takes you step by step disassembly and assembly.  Really helped me.

Agree completely.  No real mystery to it.  Removing the bolt is a little strange or different.  I push up on the extractor with my left thumb (push hard) and turn the bolt past its normal position with my right hand.  It is easier to show than describe, but the first time you "catch on" it is easy after that.
