Way to find unit history on 1898 Krag

I just purchased an 1898 Krag Rifle, serial number 142124.  Came with Krag bayonet and Spaulding Cartridge Belt.   The guy I bought it from said it was issued to the 8th US Infantry based on some historical record he'd seen.  Is there any way to find out if a particular serial numbered weapon, or range of serial numbers, was issued to a particular unit?  Thanks!

That serial number is not listed in the Springfield Research Service records, but he may have other information linking it to that unit.
