Please help me in dating my rifle..... (Read 2815 times)

	I just came across a model 1899, serial number 849589, and I am trying to date it, and get an idea of it's value. any and all help is appreciated. Thanks!

	First number has to be a "3", there are no "8"s. It was made in 1901, and a ball-park value, if complete and original, would be around $750-1000.

	goodwood:� As Dick Hosmer reported, you must be reading a "3" as an "8" at the begining of your serial number.� #349,589 would have been produced in October 1901 per Joe Poyer's book.� Highest U.S. Krag numbers were probably around 474,xxx, with production ending around November 1903. An 1899 marked receiver should be a Carbine.

The correct answer would have been: "all 1899 marked receivers were made as carbines but some were altered to short rifle format."

We also know that Krag receivers, un-used in said main sequence, do occur with much higher numbers - to 490,000 or slightly beyond.

	It seems that I was in error as to whom I was "quoting" - 5MF is almost always correct in matters such as this. It seems that more receivers were made than complete guns, since higher numbers are known than the recorded totals of arms produced - at least per data yet published.
