Inherited Krag Carbine/?

Need a little help.  Want to learn more about this rifle I inherited from my father.  Marked 1899 Serial #286501. Please take a look at the pictures.  I can post more if need be. Let me know what else you need to see on the gun?

Very nice carbine which appears to be correct except for the front sight blade which is a commercial piece added after it left Springfield. It is not listed in SRS records. How's the bore and does it have a cartouche on the left side of the stock above and slightly to the rear of the trigger guard?

Here is a picture of the cartouche.  Don't know enough about weapons to give an opinion on the bore.  It does have the original cleaning kit in the stock.  What does it mean that it is not in the SRS records?  Thanks for your help.

Springfield Research has a list of military firearms, Krags included, in which individual serial numbers are referenced as to where , and sometimes, to whom a gun was shipped. Your serial number apparently does not appear in these records which are far from complete. Does not hurt value, just no added value had it been shipped to someone famous or to a famous unit such as the Rough Riders (of course, an 1899 Carbine could not and was not used during that conflict) Dave

Thanks for all the help.  I am considering taking it to my local gunsmith to have it cleaned at checked out.  My father say's he has not fired it in 30 years.  I don't want to hurt the value, but I do want to have it cleaned and checked out.  Any suggestions?

Azpeoria:  Go slow and do no harm.  Many "gunsmiths" are Bubba!  I don't see anything you can not do yourself with some knowledge, proper tools, Hoppe,s #9 & oooo steel wool, flannel rags, boiled linseed oil, and Howard's wax and wood feed.  If you go to a gunsmith, make sure he is knowledgeable about antique guns (and specifically Krags).  If the gunsmith advises "re-bluing" all the metal or sanding and refinishing the stock, grab your carbine and run away!  Chuck
