I just registered on this form today and hope to learn all I can about the one Krag I have. I recently procured an 1898 Krag carbine from a gentleman in Kansas, the serial number is 476138. I believe what I have is a cut-down version and not an original carbine. I tried to post a picture or two but it made the file too big.

You are correct. Genuine 1898 Carbines are found in the 112-135xxx range, only. ANY serial number starting with a 2, 3, or 4, is a cut-down rifle. This will only affect collector value - they're still great guns for hunting and having fun on the range. Welcome!

Thanks Dick, I had a prima Krag back in the early 60s but I was wheeling and dealing then and didn't hang on to it! I've always wanted another and I'm really not worried about collector value. The carbine I have is real nice and should be a good shooter - hope to get it to the range this next week. The only problem I have with it is that it doesn't seem to have any windage adjustment on the rear sight.
Thanks again,
Ed

Welcome Old Chief!

Lots of great people here, and a plethora of useful knowledge too!

As for your sight, a picture would help identify the model and whether it is adjustable or not (it should be).  Just resize the photos to less than 250 Kb size.
