1894 dated bayonet.....
Feb 16th, 2012 at 3:43pm
Print Post
I have a three digit s/n rifle dated 1894 and would like to have a 94 dated bayonet.  I have found one but it is in pretty poor condition, especially the scabbard.
Still, aren't these pretty rare?
I have never seen on before.
Any info or opinions would be appreciated.
Please e-mail me at longhunter@digitalrazor.net.
Thanks

The blades are quite a bit more common than the scabbards, though they surely don't show up every day.

The rare scabbard is of the simple metal hook style which swivels 360°. Also, the mouthpiece is VERY slightly trapezoidal, but enough so that the blade will only go in one way. No other Krag scabbard is worth a premium, so don't overpay for an 1894 blade in a later scabbard.

What is the price of the set?

I was happy to pay $225 a couple of years ago for a decent blade, and scabbard having two significant dents. I've seen other blades since, but not another "keystone" scabbard.

Mr. Hosmer,
Good to hear from you.  I have discussed other items on other sites and appreciate your help.
I found the bayonet on e-bay.  They had a but it now of something like $202.00.  I thought that too much, only due to the poor condition of both bayonet and scabbard, and that it is the later incorrect scabbard.
There was a place for me to make an offer and I did of $128.00, but have not heard back.
I would much rather pay somewhat more but get a better condition example.  It does not need be pristine, but better would be, well better.
Do you think I should offer more if I still can?  The scabbard is probably worthless it is so dented.
Thanks so much.

The problem is going to be finding the right scabbard. Most were modified or just plain used up. I'd follow gunbroker.com, and look at every Krag bayonet at every gun show I went to.

I suppose I'd go $150/$175 or so for a decent/nice 1894 bayonet, even figuring to discard the scabbard if need be, or use it as trade later - maybe some day you'll find a late blade in an early scabbard. Also, for that money, the grips and rivets must be the original flush-polished ones. A re-gripped 1894 is worth no more than any other date.

In any event, you'll have to dig - I had my 1892 rifle for many years before stumbling onto the bayonet. FWIW, I don't subscribe to having to have a bayonet for every rifle in the collection. These days that can run the cost way up.

Sir,
Thank you for the reply and information.  I guess I failed to mention that I already do have a Krag bayonet dated 1898.
But with it I DO HAVE the early "hook" style scabbard (M92)?
It is the later type that will not rotate 360, and the blade can be entered either way, but it will do.  It only has a few dents.
I figured I'd just switch the scabbards if I get this 1894.
Thanks again, I think I will up my offer a little.
Regards,
Brad
