1898 Krag rifle 3-piece cleaning rod

Being new to a very nice acquired 1898 Krag rifle. I don't have a 3-piece rod yet, but can someone tell me the individual  length of one piece of these rods that fit in the butt. I would guess about 8 inches.
And how come there are only three that when put together would not fit the length of the bore?

You were - seriously - supposed to combine sections with a buddy. At least that was what was stated when - in the beginning - the carbines were only issued with two sections.
