1896 Carbine or not? Any info appreciated (Read 4408 times)

	Hello all, New member here and new to the Krag world I bought this Krag a few months ago on a whim and found this great forum upon doing research. I bought it as a shooter and do not have much coin invested so if its not a real carbine my feeling won't get hurt With that said, I know the rear sight is a rifle sight and it does fall in the carbine serial range (74xxx) Original JSA cartouche is prominent along with the circle P behind the trigger guard. It came with 2 original cleaning rods in the butt trap ( I read somewhere that carbines were only issued with 2 ) Fire away and thanks, Ed

	Hi Desmoed, You have stated that you know it has a rear sight is for the rifle. We know it is a 1896. Take a cleaning rod and measure the barrel from the crown to the head of the bolt. Barrel should be crowned not flat and exactly 22". Measure the dia. at the muzzle. I've got to measure one of mine to be sure. The length of stock in front of the band appears to be longer then it should be, but could be the photo. Check the front of the stock to see if any plugs are present. If a cut down stock it would have to be filled. I'm sure others who have more knowledge will join in. Take a look at the post carbine candy and carbine candy #2 to compare to yours. Top one is the '96. Looks very nice. You may have lucked out. John

John Mucho thanks� The barrel is exactly 22 in long with a factory crown That one photo showing the forend came out weird due to the angle - in the photo it appears curved and longer than actual The stock extends 3.5 in from the barrel band forward. No plug indicating a cut down rifle stock as well.

	Desmoed:� It looks like you have a lot of real 1896 carbine.� You said it has a Rifle Rear Sight.� What are the graduations on the sight ladder?

	Yeah, how about a picture of the rear sight? My untrained eye hasn't seen any evidence that it's not a carbine yet.

	Its a rifle sight - graduated to 1800. It is stamped with a C but I suspect someone did that in an attempt to pass it off as a carbine sight. I knew it was a rifle sight when I bought it but otherwise it looked all carbine to me

	I see nothing wrong with it, and, it serves to illustrate just how nice such a piece can look with the rifle sight. It does not detract from wall appeal, or shooting, at all. There is absolutely NO reason to go hunting for, or fretting about, stock tip abnormalities, when it is the short 30" stock under consideration! Reason, the grasping grooves - which cannot be fooled with, period, are significantly shorter! It is the later 32" stock where one needs to worry about pin vs. band spring, and the dreaded "added swivels". Good find, and welcome.
