New guy with an old Krag (Read 5004 times)

	New guy from Canada, a fellow on milsurps.com directed my here. I've got a poorly treated Krag with a low serial number. And while I'd like info & or direction; it's not so I can resell it for huge dollars. Sure I'd smile if someone said it was relatively rare but I paid way too much when I bought it to entertain resale. The serial # is 1993, I'm thinking that's pretty low. Great bore, but the sights suck! Fellow from milsurp thought I might be able to find something in the classifieds here. What type do I require to match this rifle or carbine whatever it may be

	acording to the Poyer book on Krags your rifle was made inAug 1894 making it a Model 1892 and depending on its shape and if it is still in the orginal state it could be worth some money. But we would need to see some pictures of the rifle to be able to know for sure what you have.

	Real quick questions: (1) Does it have a long cleaning rod (or open groove for same) under the barrel? (2) Is the butt plate perfectly flat at toe, or does it curve in about 3/8"? (3) Does the extractor have a cross-pin at top front, which engages a notch at rear of receiver, to hold the bolt open?

	I tried to post pic`s initially but it won`t let you post pic`s on the 1st one. Here goes. (You need to *Login* to view media files and links) (You need to *Login* to view media files and links) I can`t answer indepth questions as I`m working on the rigs 800 miles from home ( and the gun). It`s got 3 holes under a trapdoor in the Butt. The front sight looks soldered on with a brass blade. Yeah it`s been Bubba`d. But the bore is still shiny and it`s smooth as silk.

	I'm guessing here, but the barrel looks like it's 30 inches. Did you measure it? Drop a cleaning rod down the barrel with the bolt closed... mark the rod, and then measure it. I can't understand why someone would remove the original sight post if the barrel is not cut, but I'm not a bubba... LOL.

	I`m a long ways from home ( hence I can`t measure it) but I can tell you the bbl is much less than 30 inches. I`d guess 22 - 24 from memory

	Looking at the picture it looks like the Rifle with a 30 in barrel. and is missing the rear site and upeer hand guard and has had the lower stock cut to sporterize it. looks like you have a lot of work ahead of you.

	Funny that photo from the muzzle end must make it look long; it`s not. At best the muzzle reaches your hip. I`ve got a few Full dress military rifles with long bbls, this one is pretty short compared to them. Oh I`ll change that nasty - ass rear sight for a proper Krag sight if it`s feasable; a No-smith scope mount from S & K it the original irons are too costly. The other side has a triangular piece missing from the stock just ahead of the magazine cover. Macon makes new stocks for it ( last I`d heard anyhow ). It`ll probably get one of those. I only purchased it because I love the mechanics of it; it`s like a Ross rifle, different enough to be interesting. Extremely well machined. I find Mauser`s and Lee Enfields to be somewhat boring. The tricky part is giving it a freshen-up without making it look gaudy. Right now it just looks `Rode hard and put away wet` I purchased 250 rds of mixed manufactured Ammo, some of it is virgin unprimed brass & a set of dies. Elmer Keith speaks very highly of it in `Pet Loads`a solid 200 yard elk gun. I plan on just shooting deer with it so that may extend my range to 300 yds; any more than that is unsportsmanlike IMO.
