Mod 1898 Sporter Questions

I recently acquired an old Krag rifle Model 1898 (as a "shooter") that someone invested some time modifying.  The bore appears to be in excellent condition.  The S/N is 1859xx.  I am hoping you folks can answer a coupe questions I have.
1) Is standard Win and Rem factory production ammo safe to use in this model rifle?
2) Can you tell me when it was made?
Thanks,
Lee

Looks like a very nicely sportered Krag.  It appears to be cutdown with a 1903A3 front sight and a Redfield 102 no-tap rear sight.  It should be a pretty good shooter, and quite accurate too!

As for ammo... yes, Remington and Winchester factory ammo is fine.  There is other factory ammo available too, from companies like Bitterroot.  Check with web sites like Cheaper Than Dirt... the ammo will be less expensive than buying at a sporting good store.  A word of advice...  Save your brass!!!  You may not want to reload now, but with the price of 30-40 ammo as high as it is, it will definitely save you money in the long run.

Welcome to the wonderful world of Krags!
Paul

Thanks very much for the information!  I am really looking forward to spending some time at the range with this rifle.  I believe this rifle was very important to someone years ago, and I am looking forward to adding a chapter to its story.
