Krag Rifle

Hi

Just joined this forum and was looking for some info on a Krag rifle I recently purchased.  I know very little about these firearms, as my primary rifle collecting interest is Mauser 98ks.
I have no idea of it value.  What year was it made?

Thank you

Serial #438982
There is a faded black circle with a letter inside, located on the stock behind the trigger guard. No other visible stamping on the stock.
The boar would be considered fair to good, with distict rifling visible.

Gercolctor:  Your Model 1898 Krag was probably built in February 1903.  The stock stamp behind the trigger-guard is a stylized "P" in a circle.  This indicates the stock passed inspection.  If there is not a stock Cartouche (in a rounded square with inspector initials and date)  on the left side in front of the stock-wrist, your stock is probably a field replacement.  Your stock appears to be one of the Italian Walnut stocks that were purchased around 1900-01.  Your Krag has the 1901 sight.  The metal finish looks a bit rough on your Krag.  Your stock appears to have some small cracks.  I'd guess the value of your rifle at $550 to $700.  IMHO.  The 3 piece cleaning rod and oiler are worth about $55.  Its hard to assess condition and appeal based strictly on pictures.

Gercolctor:  Your lower (mid) barrel-band with sling-swivel is on wrong.  The "U" on the barrel-band should be on the right right side of the rifle with the open top of the "U" pointed toward the muzzle.

And, last but not least, your bolt has become uncocked and it will not go back in until you fix it! Kudos for not having to ask about how to get it out, though!!   Smiley
