I just joined the forum and have a few questions.
I inherited a 1895 krag 30'40 ser#58940 and know nothing of the weapon. Any wisdom or enlightenment would be appreciated.

Well your serial number puts it as March ,1897.  Way to late to be a 1895. What is marked on the left side of the receiver?

Being above 37100, that marking would have to be "Model 1896".

The last digit of the date can be hard to distinguish between a "6" and an "8" on some specimens, in certain lighting, which can lead to questions if the bolt area isn't shown, but I've never seen an "1895" stamp that wasn't perfectly clear.
