1898 serial number question

I have an 1898 Krag that I recieved in a trade that is in very nice original condition. While looking up serial numbers for the 1898 model I saw that the serial numbers start at 110,000 and the serial number of mine is 110,037. I was wondering if a low serial number like this would add any extra value. Also I would think that there obviously could not be too many out there with a lower number than this one. Does anyone have any info on what the lowest serial number still out there is.

That was a rounding-off, it's actually closer to 109xxx - Joe Farmer has the latest info.

A "border" gun would certainly have some interest, but value, unless it was the cutover, probably shouldn't go up by much, if at all, and then only to someone who cares.  Smiley

For around 35 years now, my 1896 Rifle 37045 has stood as the highest-known "1896"; the change to "Model 1896" stamping is thought to be around 37100, as the lowest-known "Model" stamped arm is just over that - again, Joe has the data.

Claimed low is 109292.

CMP sold 109583.

Pictures would tell much.  It's more interesting if it doesn't show signs of a rebuild.

A good thing about your serial number is that it is a legal antique, which can be transferred without federal restrictions.  Numbers at or above 152670 are considered by BATF to be made in 1899 or later and are not legal antiques.
