US Springfield Armory Model 1898 Serial# 804456

Print Post
I was wondering if anyone could tell me about my rifle.  It was my grandfathers and hasn't been used in about 20 years.  From all the sites i've visited and threads i've read the serial number seems too high for a model 1898.  Does anyone know if this serial number could be the correct one?

Thanks,

-Josh

It's a "3", believe me! The first digit doesn't go over 5, let alone 8.

So does that mean it's a serial number for a model 1901? I found some website that says the serial numbers for model 1898 are from 64556-116146 and the serial numbers for model 1901 are from 290579-345318.

the Model 1898 rifle was produced right up till th end of production in 1903 and the serial number could go as high as 499036 with production starting at 109100 beining in June 1898. These numbers are subject to correction by more seasoned member with beter data as mine came from the Poyers book, so if you get different data ask for the source. then check by with the experts on this site. As I am not a expert at this time but I try to give out the best data possible.

there were only:
1892 rifle and carbine
Model 1896 rifle and carbine and cadet rifle
Model 1898 rifle and carbine
Model 1899 carbine
and a few othe various short run versions
then you also have various upgrades but the would mainly be site changes and minior stock chanes and a few othe suttle changes but only the models that are listed above, when you hear other dates like 1901, 1902 that is refering to a upgarde normally for a new version of the rear site.

Would you care to ID said website? That info is totally bogus. Wouldn't be Bowers, would it?

Also, for the purposes of this discussion, there was no "Model 1901."  (actually there was, but it was part of the development of the Model 1903, and had virtually nothing in common with the Krag - some, I believe were not even numbered.

You have a Model 1898 Krag, whose s/n begins with a "3".

Check the second digit closely for a 3.

That said I've seen higher which weren't misreads.
