I'am a new member: I've been doing alot of site reading different posts, Just a little back ground, I've a 1903 sense 1970, marine, bought it in hawaii, when I was on active duty. I shoot it every year, and I've deer hunted with it. age has caught up with my eyes, so I hunt with a Remington 700 243, redfield 4X scope. last month I bought a Krag, 1898 in a cut down carbine. it looks like it's that California Mod that was done in the 30's. The Krag was bought out of an estate, in California. The rear site is Carbine, has the (C), the front site is (A3) with no hood. 1903 corttage on the left Serial  #469673 the front metal stock guard has a pin thru the stock ahead of the guard and a (U) is stamped on the right side of the guard.it shoots really sweet,at 100 yards, it has another Corttage behind the trigger guard a circle with e.1.3 I think! also the trigger guard has something stamped on it but it's very hard to read. If any of the members would like to comment good or bad I would like to hear it Be safe and shoot clean  Sunny

brinker:  Welcome to the KCA forum.  The serial # of your Krag would place its production around September, 1903.  The 'cartouche' on the side of your stock probably has a script 'JSA' (for J.S. Adams, inspector) above the date 1903.  The stamp in the wood behind the trigger guard is probably a stylized 'P' within a circle:  this indicates the rifle was proof tested.  I don't know what you mean when you refer to your rifle as the "California Model".  I have never heard this term.  However, there was a U.S. Arsenal facility at Benicia, Calif., that did repair and refurbishment work on Krags.  Benicia is believed to have produced the so called "NRA Carbine".  This alteration was approved by the Ordnance Dept. and consisted of Krag rifles cut down to carbine length (22" barrel) with a Model 1903 front sight mounted.  These were produced in the 1920s for Civilian sales.  Since any gunsmith could produce such an arm, only a sales record can authenticate a real NRA Carbine.  The Carbine sight on your rifle is interesting.  If you can post pictures of your Krag on the forum, you will get a lot more information.

thank you for the reply Mich. and yes the barrel is 22'', and that was the company I was refering to. But I don't think this was NRA, carbine, my army buddy has the guniune carbine, that is NRA Match. I was hoping somebody had serial numbers of the Krags they modified. This is very well done, also the barrel has a dark spot on the blue where it rested in a support, possibly in a gun rack. it had to have been in that position for a number of years, to make a blueing darker. I am not really computer savy so the photo's will be tough for me. This will probably my only Krag I ever own, Thanks again be safe and shoot clean  Sunny
