Drilled & Tapped Receiver But What Mount?

Hi Everyone,

I am a new member here and have an 1898 sportsterized Krag. I am thinking of putting some glass on it and using it as a deer rifle.

The receiver is already drilled and tapped but I have no idea what the appropriate mount is. I expect there's a reasonable chance that whatever was on there before is no longer available but I would like to avoid drilling any more holes.

I haven't inquired at a gunsmith yet and am posting my query here first. Any insight would be much appreciated!

RJ:  I believe your Krag receiver is drilled and tapped for the Weaver #2 side-mount base (48402).  The #2 base is inexpensive, comes with screws, and is still made.  You also need the Weaver side mount 1" High Ring Assembly (49350), which is also still made.  This mount and rings thumb screws onto the #2 base.  The Weaver base and mount are quite rugged and position the scope off-set to the left.  This is necessary for ejection with the Krag action and is not too objectionable.  It also allows use of iron sights but obstructs the issue safety lever. I bought the #2 base first to make sure it fit my drilled receiver.  I found everything relatively cheap on ebay (try 'Weaver mounts').

Thanks butlersrangers! It certainly looks like the same dimensions. I will have a look on Ebay as you suggested.

RJ:  Glad to be of help and welcome to the forum.  You can simplify your ebay search by using "Weaver side mounts".  I noticed several #2 bases (48402) and #49350 1" sidemounts for auction, today.  Some had a Buy Now price and free shipping.  I suggest you start with the #2 Base and see if it fits your receiver (you will only be investing $12.99).

Butlersrangers, in your picture showing the Weaver mount attached to a Krag it looks like the tapped holes in the receiver are at the 9 o'clock position.  RJ's tapped holes look a little higher up.  Am I just imagining things?

gunboat:  Gunsmiths could free-hand the placement of the Weaver side-mount base on the receiver.  RJ's holes are located a bit higher and farther forward than mine.  The scope can be moved in the rings to level and correct for eye relief.  The important thing is to have clearance for ejection.

That's what I was really wondering about, ejection clearance.  In my limited experience with my first Krag I have learned that the shells are thrown petty close to straight up.  That's a good thing if you don't like hunting for your brass in the tall grass. Smiley

Gunboat57:  We do not know what diameter scope was put on RJ's Krag.  Weaver made side-mounts for 3/4", 7/8", and 1" scopes.  It's best to try 1" first because it offers more and better scope options.  Hopefully ejection is not a problem.
